Three Hornets qualify for state tennis
For the fourth straight year, Rachel Binau earned a berth in the Class 5A state tennis tournament. She and her doubles partner, junior Jessica Sharp, qualified as a team for the third time after placing third in the Oct. 7 regional at Salina Central High School.

Hornets peaking at the right time
Riding the crest of an eight-game winning streak, the Hornets picked up seven victories last week. That includes a 5-0 mark in the El Dorado tournament Oct. 7 and a sweep of an Oct. 10 league triangular at Eisenhower. The Hornets are now 17-17 overall and 5-6 in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II.

Runners finish regular season with win at Trinity
The girls scored a 52 to beat Wichita Trinity by one point on their home course. Karli Elsner led the Hornets with a time of 22:13 and a third-place finish. Riley Ranzau finished eighth and Sydney Martens was ninth; they finished with times of 22:44 and 22:49, respectively.

Hornet freshman qualifies for state golf
The Valley Center High School golf team finished the Pittsburg Class 5A Regional with a team score of 440 on Oct. 9. They did not qualify for state competition as a team.

Soccer team grabs victory on the road
On Oct. 10, the Hornets beat Goddard, 3-2, and raised their record to 5-8.

Eighth-grade volleyball teams go 1-3 on the road
Valley Center Middle School split its volleyball teams Oct. 9 to play Eisenhower and Goddard. Seventh grade was at home, while eighth-graders traveled to Eisenhower.

VCMS football teams lose to Andover
The eighth-graders were shut out, 36-0, and fell to 1-5. The seventh-graders went to overtime and lost 6-0, falling to 4-2.

Eight medal at league tennis tournament
The Hornets placed all four of their doubles teams.†In No. 1 doubles, Maddie Hamm and Eris Bishop lost in the championship game 6-2 to Andover†to capture second place.

Middle school runners finishing season
The Hornets competed Oct. 3 in Centennial Park in Newton.
