True Value gets new owners

The True Value Hardware Store in Valley Center has changed hands again.

Troy Smith, who owned the store since July 2020, sold it to Waters Hardware. The deal was finalized in late March. The store announced the change late last week.

Smith, who owns and operates a hardware store in Halstead, said, "he had a buyer," when asked why he sold the Valley Center store.

"We've been in conversation for over a year," Smith said.

The store will be called Waters Hardware and Gerken Rent-All.

Waters Hardware is a family-owned company that started more than 125 years ago with a store in Manchester, Kansas.

Gerken Rent-All purchased Waters Inc. in 2019. The company now has more than 30 hardware stores and rental locations in Kansas and Missouri.

The late Dick and Ethel Bartel bought the Valley Center hardware store in 1963. It became a True Value in 1973.
