Kechi treasure worth saving Last Updated: April 11, 2019 The hoops have been jumped through and the paperwork approved. The Kechi Playhouse will be saved. Thanks to a Kansas Community Development Block Grant of $250,000, work to repair the regional treasure can begin. The playhouse, which sits at the corner of Oliver and Kechi Road (61st), plays a unique role in the city's arts culture. It hosts locally produced plays each year, giving local actors a chance to perform and giving audiences a chance to be entertained. Owner Misty Maynard has been unable to afford the repairs the nearly 100-year-old building has needed, including brick façade improvements as well as window replacements and roof repairs. The additional privately-raised $83,000 will go toward interior improvements. The playhouse, which has been open since 1983, is worthy of the attention and every bit of the collective investment. We worried earlier this year that the project was in jeopardy when the grant application had to be resubmitted because of an issue with the required paperwork. Luckily, the snag didn't cause much of an issue and work can soon begin. The entire Kechi community, city staff and city council as well as current and former supporters of the playhouse deserve a pat on the back for seeing this fundraising process through to the end. We are eager to see the improvements that will help the playhouse live on. — The Ark Valley News |
