Highlights Last Updated: April 12, 2018 Valerie Wall of Valley Center was named Educator of the Year by the Down Syndrome Society of Wichita for her work with special needs students. "To get an award like this makes you feel validated," Wall said. "I love individuals with special needs. I feel lucky to be teaching in my spot." A retired K-12 special education teacher, Wall now teaches behavioral science at Butler Community College. She also developed and works at Friendship Fields, a program associated with Friends University where students with special needs are able to experience college life. At both colleges, Wall teaches students with special needs. She adjusts her teaching methods for her audience, including staying after each class to meet with her special needs students. The award was presented April 7 during the organization's annual Jokers and Jazz gala. The mission of the Down Syndrome Society of Wichita is to enhance the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and their families by providing them with support and resources and by raising public awareness about Down syndrome. ††† The winners of the Arick annual Easter egg toss for 2018 were Daryl and Darien Hainlen. Others participating were Myles Carter and Taylor Mitchell, Dalton Arick and Jaime Kane, and Donovyn and Dagon Arick. ††† Douglas Roberts of Wichita was a member of the Simpson College debate team that won the championship at the Pi Kappa Delta National. Tournament March 13 through 17 at Tennessee State University in Nashville. This was the second time in three years that Simpson has won the national title in debate. Roberts is the son of Ronda Bowen and Aaron Bowen. |
