From the library By Janice Sharp, director Last Updated: April 12, 2018 Library's teen party scheduled for April 20 The Friends book sale will continue until 2 p.m. April 14. There are still plenty of items to choose from including audio books, playaways and craft magazines. Suggested prices for the books are $1 for hardback books and 50 cents for paperback books. Unsold items will be boxed next week for distribution to the Sedgwick County Jail, Open Door Ministries and other organizations in need. We will have a teen party from 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 20. We will be decorating shirts at the request of the teens at our last party. Each teen attending should bring a white or light colored T-shirt so they can decorate it as they choose. RSVPs for the party should be in by 6 p.m. April 16. Check Facebook for information regarding how shirts should be prepared. We have scheduled a book discussion/talk for "Twice a Soldier' by Russell Babcock beginning at 7 p.m. April 26. Mr. Babcock will be here to share his experiences serving in several conflicts during his years of service to our country. The book was co-authored by Glen Sharp. Books will be available for anyone wishing to purchase one. We are another week closer to our move into the new library. Based upon our tentative date of occupancy, we will close May 21 and remain closed for possibly three weeks. If the move is completed earlier, we will open. We will allow a six-week checkout period from May 7 through June 18 for books only. Patrons who are in good standing (all fines paid, all outstanding overdues cleared, current contact information and state approved-identification on file) will be allowed to check out 50 print materials per library card. We will not check out DVDs after May 12 so that all movies are returned prior to the move. Audio books may be checked out until closing May 19. We will stop all interlibrary loans May 1 and resume them June 11. We will stop all interlibrary service for that period, incoming and outgoing. Individuals with questions as to if their accounts are in good standing should talk with Janice or Terry. We realize this schedule will be an inconvenience for our patrons, but we are excited to relocate to our new library that so many of our community members donated money for. It is anticipated the grand opening of the Community Center/Library will be July 4. Staff will make every effort to have the public Internet computers available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday at our old facility until the computers are moved to the new facility. The set-up of our technology will be based on the schedule of our technology consultants. We have had many individuals offer to help us with the move. We have a sign-up sheet at the circulation desk for those who are available. We will notify individuals as we need them. There was a planning meeting this week with the library board and the City Council to discuss issues pertaining to both parties. Our dates may change as a result of that meeting. The 2018 Summer Reading Program, Libraries Rock, will begin June 6 with the 9 and 11 a.m. programs to be held at Le Venue. June programs will be held at Le Venue with the exception of June 20 for our Park Walk, which will be held in McLaughlin Park. July programs will be held in the new facility. A wreath workshop has been scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon April 28. Participants should bring a 12-inch wire wreath base and five yards of 45-inch wide cotton fabric. Please bring cutting mats, rulers and rotary cutters if available. Please RSVP for this workshop by 6 p.m. April 23. Watch for the insert in the May water bill. The insert will provide a list of all library activities for May through August. There will be activities for children, teens, adults and families, all free of charge. … In planning for our summer reading program, we will need the following supplies: round cardboard oatmeal containers with lids, plastic coffee cans with lids, Pringles or Lay's chip cans with lids, paper towel tubes, plastic water bottles with lids (washed and dried please), wide mouth plastic bottles with lids (such as Gatorade, vitamin water or juice bottles) and bottle caps (plastic or metal). Donations will be accepted at the library at any time. We appreciate the help to make our summer programming a great success for our kids.
