Wiley Glover (center) is joined by head coach Corey Jones and assistant coach Kyrie Edwards at her signing Nov. 9. Glover signs with D1 Marshall By Taylor Messick Last Updated: November 23, 2016 On Nov. 9, Valley Center High School outfielder Wylie Glover officially signed to play softball at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., a member of Conference USA. Glover was a coaches association all-state selection and first-team All-Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II pick as a junior. She hopes to study forensic chemistry and said that even before colleges started recruiting her, Marshall and Dartmouth were at the top of her list. Dartmouth doesn't offer her major and has different guidelines for student-athletes, so Glover said the decision was easy, but still scary. "Marshall was always the one that stuck out," said Glover. "I was looking into the east coast. I'm really excited, but I can't say that I haven't gotten emotional about it a couple times. It's scary and it's going to be a rough time getting used to being that far away from my family." The feeling is mutual with Glover's dad, Bill Glover. He said the transition will take some getting used to, but he is proud and supportive of his daughter's decision. "I'm proud of what she's done," Bill said. "She's worked hard and this is the culmination of that. It's going to be a change, but it's what she wants to do and we're behind her 100 percent. We'll get there to see her as much as possible." Valley Center coach Corey Jones is also proud of Glover and says he has no doubt she has what it will take to be successful. "She's played softball her whole life," said Jones. "She has trained for this and dedicated her whole life to getting good grades to go to a division one school. They have her major there and she gets to play softball as well and I think her work ethic will get her where she needs to be." Glover is focused and got the chance to meet others from her incoming class on her recruiting trip. She said she feels those around her will help her to push herself and increase her chances of success. "There's another girl I met named Armani Brown," she said. "She's from California. Her and I are pretty close and we talk all the time about always working hard and pushing each other so we can play, work towards starting and be successful at the college level." |
