Perry Ellis, star forward for the University of Kansas basketball team, spoke to a gym full of fifth- and sixth-grade students Aug. 14. He also dunked the basketball on Valley Center Intermediate School Principal Greg Lehr, and he blocked Superintendent Cory Gibson's shot attempt.

Ellis — who is friends with the Kip Pulliam and his family, who live in the Valley Center school district — talked about the importance of homework and setting priorities.

Ellis said he is grateful to be able to speak to young students.

Lehr said he Ellis is a good role model for students.

"It's always a good feeling coming out. They just get so excited. It just makes me feel good inside," Ellis said.

After the talk, Ellis was surrounded by students — and intermediate school teachers and staff — for autographs and pictures.

"It's an honor. It's a blessing. I thank God I'm in the position to do this stuff," Ellis said.
