Challenges remain with street project
Last Updated: August 13, 2015

The worst is over, but it will remain a challenge for drivers and businesses in Valley Center.

Meridian is open to all lanes of traffic, for the most part, but the project is now cutting off an entire neighborhood along Ford (77th) from the heart of the city.

Prairie Lakes and Brookfield residents must find an alternate route to the downtown area because Ford has been closed at Meridian.

The Meridian and Ford reconstruction project has already made a dent in the local economy. Ask any business owner along Meridian, and he or she will likely tell you the same thing: business dropped considerably when South Meridian was torn up.

Although every business was at least accessible throughout the reconstruction project — of course, not whenever it rained more than a couple of inches and Meridian flooded — the construction zone kept shoppers away.

Unfortunately, those dollars will never be recovered locally.

We appreciated the efforts of the Valley Center Chamber of Commerce as well as individual business owners to battle back with signs and promotions. We hope it helped.

It will be at least two more months before we can put this behind us.
