Summer reading logs due this week

We had our last performer this week for the 2014 Summer Reading Program – FIZZ! BOOM! READ! All that remains is our Completion Party on July 30. The party will be held at the Library beginning at 10 a.m. with the distribution of reading certificates, reading logs and prize bags for children that turned in their reading logs by the deadline of 4 p.m., July 26. This is an absolute deadline — no exceptions. The deadline enables us to count all reading accomplishments and record them for our statistics. We put prizes and reading incentives in reading bags then have them in order alphabetically to hand out at the party. If we have not received a reading log by the deadline, we do not provide prizes — only a reading certificate. There are several days remaining to complete minimum requirements of reading for their logs. The children up through 2nd grade in the fall should read a minimum of 30 books; the children in 3rd grade and above should read a minimum of 30 hours to complete the requirements of the program. Following the distribution of the prizes, the Valley Center Fire Department will be on hand to spray the kids from the tank truck. Please make sure that your children wear clothing for them to play in the water including flip flops to protect their feel. Please bring towels and possibly chairs for you to watch. We will have all activities for the party outside this year.

The deadline for returning reading logs for our teens was July 22. If they have met their collective reading challenge of 25,000 pages, turned in their logs, and provided an RSVP for the party, they will be given pizza at the End of Summer Party at 6:30 p.m., on July 25. Those who did not turn in reading logs or complete the challenge should come at 7 p.m.

The July 24 movie will be "Space Buddies" (G) on 2 p.m.; and the last movie for the summer on July 31 will be "Iron Giant" (PG). We request that an adult or responsible person over 12 years of age accompany children eight years and younger. Please do not bring food or drinks to the movies. Popcorn will be served once the movie has started. Movies will not be shown during August.

Our final session of summer story time will be on July 29. The final movie for the summer movies will be on July 31.

The next adult event will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., on Aug. 7, for game night. Snacks will be provided. The library will host the Wheat State Treasure Hunters — metal hunting event on Aug. 16. This event from noon to 4 p.m. is for adults only — with a limit of 15 attendees. Please call or stop by the library to place your name on the list. Adult reading logs are due by 4 p.m., on Aug. 30. The adult challenge has been to locate six books that are connected to the Periodic Table of Elements by the two-letter symbol then find a book with a title or author starting with these letters. Prizes will be given to adults turning their logs of titles by the deadline.

We have several openings available for our next E-reader clinic scheduled from 1 – 2 p.m., on July 26. If you're having difficulty setting up your E-reader, this is the place to get the assistance you need. We cover a variety of E-readers that are available.

The library will host a carnival for children on Aug. 9, from 1 – 3 p.m. We will have multiple games and crafts set up for kids to enjoy outside. This replaces the carnival event we have previously held during our summer reading program.

We have been blessed to have rain lately; however, we have found books in our book drop wet from the rain blowing in. We would request that you please place books in a plastic grocery bag (tied) prior to placing them in the drop box.

We have also noticed that some of our hardback books with clear jacket covers have been returned with indications that the books have been used for a base in writing heavily on paper. We have also had books that appeared a pen or pencil had been pounded on the surface. We love for patrons to read our books but please don't mistreat them. Books and the processing supplies are purchased with your tax monies.
