A broken pump caused the shutdown of the Valley Center public swimming pool July 17, a problem that was fixed as the pool reopened July 24.

Recreation commission officials said recent unseasonably cool and rainy weather raised the phosphorous levels in the pool, which damaged the pump.

Officials said there was no way to avoid the problem.

The city ordered parts to repair the pump, but was waiting on them to arrive as late as July 22.

Meanwhile, without a pump, the pool started getting cloudy and dirty, forcing city workers to do what they could to keep it clean with the hopes of reopening the pool this week. The pool  reopened at noon July 24.
