Looking Back Last Updated: July 24, 2014 50 years ago Daryl Miller spent last week at Lousville, Ky., participating in a national music contest. He was one of over 50 students making the trip from Temp Accordion School in Wichita. Mrs. Ellen Mohr was hostess to 15 members of Eta Omega Chapter of Sigma Phi Gamma sorority for a cookout and swimming party. 45 years ago Harvey M. German, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey F. German, has been accepted at Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management at Phoenix, Ariz. This school provides specialized training in foreign trade, including import-export and international marketing. Harvey will begin school in Phoenix after receiving his bachelor's of business administration degree at Wichita State University Aug. 3. Mr. Ed Chambles' sister Elizabeth was an overnight guest of the Chambles'. 40 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Nutter Jr. of Valley Center announced the birth of a son, Robert Lee, July 9, 1974, weighing 9 pounds, 4 ounces. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Nutter Sr. The Dave McCutcheon family, wife Norma, children Lori and Paul and mother Mrs. Ida McCutcheon, have returned from a European tour. The family visited London, Paris, Strassburg, France, Salzburg, Austria, and Leysin, Switzerland, before returning to Wichita. 35 years ago Bill and Marlene Nolte and family of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Park City, were overnight guests of their cousin, Robert Leewright, on July 17. Mrs. Tom Witham and Irene Geenbank were Thursday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Don Witham for a German dinner. 30 years ago Airman James Harvey, son of Matt Harvey of rural Valley Center, has completed Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Harvey, who is remaining at Lackland for specialized training in the security police field, studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. Completion of this training earned Harvey credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force. Cindy and Scott Shepard of Valley Center announce the birth of their son, Marcus Neal Shepard, on July 13. He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 20 inches long. He has one brother, Matthew, 5. Grandparents are June and Jerry Pierce and Vi and Stuart Shepard, all of Valley Center. 25 years ago Helena Meyer of Valley Center won a seven-day trip to Cancun, Mexico, and $200 as one of the top 10 drivers for MNX Inc. (Missouri-Nebraska Express trucking company). Meyer was honored for excellence in fuel consumption, longevity, safety, miles run and overall job performance. Amy Sisler is working with a summer missions team, Brazil Gospel Fellowship Mission, and will return to Calvary Bible College in August.. 20 years ago Kerry Lynn Bridgewater of Valley Center and Jack Dewayne Day of Jacksonville, Fla., announce their engagement and approaching marriage. The bride-elect is the daughter of David and Lorraine Bridgewater of Valley Center and is a 1991 graduate of Valley Center High School. She is employed as a pharmacy technician at Halstead Hospital. The prospective groom is the grandson of Cecil and Waltina Day of Burbank, Okla., formerly of Valley Center. A 1989 graduate of Valley Center High School, he is serving with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Saratoga. The couple plans a Dec. 10 wedding at First United Methodist Church. Megan Thornton, daughter of Rick and Jeannette Thornton of Valley Center, has completed registration at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. 15 years ago Gerald Wiewel, an employee of United Parcel Service, recently was honored for completing 20 years of service with the company. Weiwel works in the Wichita facility. He and his wife Brenda live in Valley Center. They have three children: Jeremy, 20; John, 18; and Kyle, 13. Don and Teena Solander of Gas announce the engagement of their daughter, Trisha, to Ryan Schmidt, son of Greg and Terry Schmidt of Valley Center. The bride-elect graduated from Cornerstone Christian Academy in Iola and is a teller at Intrust Bank in Valley Center. The prospective groom graduated from Valley Center High School and owns a painting business. The couple plans a Sept. 11 wedding at Valley Center Assembly of God. 10 years ago Jennifer Maris, daughter of Roger and Cheryl Maris of Valley Center, earned a bachelor's in biology in May at Emporia State University. She has accepted a position with Hospira, formerly Abbott Labs, in McPherson, in the chemistry department. Air Force Airman Chad Carsten, son of Alan and Stacy Carsten of Valley Center, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. 5 years ago Lake Battles of Park City was named to the honorable mention honor roll for the 2009 spring semester at Garden City Community College. The list is for students with grade point averages of between 3.0 and 3.199 for the semester. Maria Church, daughter of Andrew and Kristi Church, graduate from Level 2 of the Future Astronaut Training Program (FATP) at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center on June 19. She will be a ninth grader at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire. The week-long astronaut camp is for students entering seventh through 10th grades and emphasizes teamwork, leadership and problem solving. |
