Library haunted? They're investigating

Our first adult program for our summer programming was on May 17 when members of the Wichita Paranormal Research Society team came to present information regarding their experiences with the paranormal. The evening was interesting with an excellent group of attendees with lots of questions. Our next step will be to schedule an investigation to determine if our library has ghosts. We'll keep you posted.

The Summer Reading Program – Dig Into Reading – will begin in two weeks! We have the performers scheduled and the crafts chosen; now all we need are parents to bring in registration forms for their children. The library staff is excited about this year's program. We have several new performers this year plus several that we've had in the past. So bring in your registration forms then mark your calendars for each Wednesday beginning June 5 for either the 9 a.m. session or the 11 a.m. session. The weekly programs are designed for children of all ages; however, children eight years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult or a person 12 years of age or older that is responsible. All forms are available; registration, performer schedule, guidelines, reading logs.

We also have programs for our teens and adults. The teen theme "Beneath the Surface" is developed for children in 6th grade and above. The teens have adopted an acronym – TRIBE (Teens Read Incredible Books Everywhere). Their challenge is to collectively read 25,000 pages until the cut-off date of July 27. All teens that turn in their reading logs and register will have pizza for their party. There are five events scheduled between June 7 and August 2 for the TRIBE.

The adult program "Groundbreaking Reads" will have five events scheduled between May 17 and July 25. They are encouraged to participate in the Blind Date Book Challenge. In keeping with the Underground theme for all ages, selected titles have been wrapped in brown paper for "blind" choosing. Adults will receive a t-shirt after reading six books by August 31. The "blind" books will include fiction, non-fiction, mystery, young adult, western, and junior fiction titles.

Please bring us your recipes for the community-wide cookbook. Our goal is to have the cookbooks ready to sell at the 2013 Fall Festival. The cost of the cookbooks will be determined by the number of recipes included and the number of books ordered. Recipes can be brought in for us to photocopy or can be emailed to valleycenterlibrary@yahoo.com. If we have your email address, we'll send you the recipe form. The money generated from the sale of the cookbooks will be added to the library building fund. We will accept pre-orders for the cookbooks. We hope to collect 400–600 recipes. The deadline is June 15 for submission of recipes.

The Summer Movies will begin June 3 with movies shown each Monday and Thursday at 2 p.m. Popcorn will be served once the movies begin. Children under the age of eight or those with behavioral issues should be accompanied by an adult or a caregiver over the age of 12. We request that no food or drink be brought in from the outside. We also request that individuals not enter the library with wet swimming suits and have appropriate cover-ups over suits.

The Valley Center Historical Society is working on the new phone books. If you are a resident of Valley Center and would like to have your cell phone listed in the local directory or make changes to your existing information, please call Pat Postlethwait at 744-2275, Darlene Richards at 755-1619, or Betty James at 640-7173. The new books will be available at this year's Fall Festival.

Upcoming Events –

May 23 – World Turtle Day

May 25 – Cookie Monster's birthday

May 27 – Cellophane Tape Day (How would we live without this tape?)

May 31 – World No-Tobacco Day

June 1 – Say Something Nice Day

June is National Candy Month and National Smile Month! Don't you think it's obvious to have the correlation between the candy and the smiles?

Watch for the sign on the doors announcing "Free Fines Day" when you come in during the month.
