Fire destroys rural mobile home

A doublewide mobile home was destroyed and a dog died in a May 15 fire in the 5800 block of East 109th North between Oliver and Woodlawn. The fire was reported shortly before 2 p.m. and the home was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived on scene. Sedgwick Count Fire Chief Gary Curmode said a man lived alone at the home. He said the man's son sometimes stayed at the residence with him.

No one was home when the fire started and the cause was not immediately determined. Fire crews from Sedgwick County and Valley Center responded with assistance from a crew from McConnell Air Force Base that provided a tender used to transport water in the rural area without a nearby fire hydrant.

Crews had the blaze under control less than an hour after responding to the fire. The fire did not spread to any surrounding homes or a neighboring detached garage, Cormode said. He said there were several dogs at the scene, most of which were unharmed.

One dog died from its injuries likely resulting from smoke inhalation or overheating. The other animals were moved to safety, Curmode said.
