Sign rule makes sense The new rules, which were made necessary by the addition of a couple of signs in prominent areas, allows sign owners in residential areas to keep them lit overnight as long as they don't exceed a certain limit.

Hornets drop two at Goddard Randy Fisher After a doubleheader sweep April 26 at Goddard, 22-18 and 5-1, the Hornets have now lost five in a row. They are 4-12 overall and 1-8 in Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II.

Tennis team kicks off postseason this week Randy Fisher Spring sports postseason gets underway for Valley Center High School May 3 when the tennis squad travels to McPherson to defend its regional tournament title. The field includes Great Bend, Hays, Maize, McPherson, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South and Valley Center. State tennis is May 10 and 11 at Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

Track team stacks up against regional foes Chris Strunk Facing many of the athletes they will see at regionals in a couple of weeks, the Valley Center High School girls track team placed second at the eight-team McPherson Invitational April 25, while the boys were third.

VCMS track team competes at Prairie Hills The News staff The seventh-grade and eighth-grade girls placed third, while the seventh-grade boys were sixth and the eighth-grade boys fifth.

Valley Center golfers compete at Hesston The News staff Mason Hamm had the Hornets' best score with a 95 to finish 46th. He shot a 49 on the front nine holes and a 46 on the back.

Valley finishes league with two losses Chris Strunk The Hornets lost 15-0 in the first game and 6-3 in the second. Valley fell to 3-13 overall and finished 3-9 in the league.

Barber’s grandson begins pro career Chris Strunk Powers, who grew up in Valley Center and Wichita and played football at Oklahoma University, was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the NFL draft last week. He was the 123rd overall pick.

Train scares brave coyote The News staff On April 27, Valley Center police were sent to the 200 block of East Ford to check for an apparently brave coyote that was reportedly following a woman who was walking. A passerby saw the coyote and honked his car horn at the woman to get her attention and to let her know that the animal was behind her.
