Hornets seeded fifth in Jam, open with Ulysses again Randy Fisher In Valley Center, that means it's time for the January Jam. The 36th annual event will be held Jan. 17 through 19 at Valley Center High School.

Middle school girls sweep Maize, win three against Eisenhower The News staff It was a productive week for the Valley Center Middle School girls basketball teams. The Hornets swept Maize Jan. 14 and won three out of four against Eisenhower Jan. 10. Their only loss was by the seventh-grade A team in a three-point squeaker.

Schulz multi-state coach of the year The News staff Eight months after he led the Valley Center High School boys tennis team to a Class 5A state title, Schulz was named Midwest Coach of the Year for Boys Tennis, which includes Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota.

Swim team 7th at West The News staff The Valley Center High School swim team visited Wichita West High School on Jan. 12 to face off with 11 other schools. The boys had one of their most solid performances of the season and finished in seventh place in total points.

Valley Center senior receives coveted teaching scholarship The News staff Lizzie Pierce, a senior at Valley Center High School, was one of five high school seniors who were awarded a Doris and Ralph Klose Endowed Scholarship through Wichita State University's College of Applied Studies.

Wrestlers 16th at Newton tournament Jeremiah Strunk The Valley Center High School wrestling team competed in Newton's Tournament of Champions Jan. 11 and 12. After a first-place finish for the Hornets last year, the younger team was optimistic. The competition consisted of some of the best teams in the state from 4A, 5A, and 6A.

7-year-old found rollerskating to school The News staff A 7-year-old girl was missing from her Valley Center home for nearly an hour Jan. 8, but she was found safe with her skates on in the neighborhood.

Band support group to host chili cookoff The News staff Valley Center Band Aide will host its second biennial chili cookoff from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at the high school. The event is a fundraiser for the band program.

Driver, passenger hurt in two-vehicle wreck The News staff A driver and his passenger were taken to the hospital with injuries Jan. 9 after their vehicle struck a second vehicle backing up on 85th Street North near Jacobs, west of Valley Center.
