Valley housing initiative welcome The City of Valley Center announced it was starting an incentive program to encourage home fix-up projects, and the city planning board gave tentative approval to a zoning change to allow a multi-family housing project at an empty strip mall in the heart of the city.

Kechi approves signs for PD Taylor Messick Kechi asked for bids from four businesses but only got one back from George Lay Signs Inc. City Clerk Laura Hill said this was possibly due to the fact that other companies have been outbid by George Lay Signs on three previous Kechi jobs. She said the job was likely more economical for George Lay Signs since it already has the city's artwork.

Hornet boys roll at Kingman Classic Randy Fisher That buzz saw the Cardinals ran into Dec. 4 was the Valley Center High School boys basketball team. The Hornets jumped on top at the get-go and rolled to a 63-17 win in the first round of the Kingman Eagle Classic.

Hornet girls falter in second half Randy Fisher The first girls basketball game of the season for Valley Center High School can be summed up as too many turnovers, too few rebounds and too much of the Koesters.

Middle school wrestlers win four more duals Randy Fisher The Valley Center Middle School ran its dual record to 9-1 by sweeping a pair of double duals. Valley beat Maize 96-6 and Derby 66-22 at home Dec. 4. At Maize on Nov. 29, the Hornets defeated Maize 76-30 and Maize South 66-33.

Valley competes in first swimming events Taylor Messick The highest finish of the day was by Dale Hatfield in the 100-yard butterfly. He took ninth place for the Hornets with a time of 1:20.04. Cameron Morand earned a couple of 11th-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. Tristan Mollelo finished 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Valley fourth at opening tournament Jeremiah Strunk The Hornets placed fourth and captured three individual championships — Alyeus Craig at 126 pounds, Kyler Meyer (182), and Tony Caldwell (285).

Local ballet dancers in ‘Nutcracker’ The News staff Lexi Ashcraft, a freshman at Valley Center High School, will be dancing in the snow scene, waltz of the flowers and the Russian variation.

Part of incomplete Fifth Street opens to traffic Chris Strunk The road — from the bridge over the Little Ditch to the intersection with the High Point and Fiddler's Creek neighborhoods — opened on Nov. 30. The rest of Fifth — east to Broadway — will remain closed through at least the end of the year.

Police make drug arrests The News staff The first incident started as a traffic stop in the 1300 block of South Meridian. The driver of the vehicle was arrested on a warrant through Wichita and a charge of driving with a suspended license. After the arrest, Max, the police department's drug dog, was brought in, and he alerted to possible drugs inside the vehicle. The vehicle was searched. Drug paraphernalia was found in a purse that belonged to a 40-year-old passenger. She was arrested.
