    The school board last week voted to request a five-year audit of the rec commission's financials. The move came during a meeting where the school board was considering the appointment of a new rec board member.

    The City of Kechi announced this week that it received funds to design and construct a downtown arts and business district in the city.

Park City issues 17 permits The News staff
    The City of Park City issued 17 building permits during July 2018 for a total valuation of $1,181,130.
Park City receives insurance premium rebate Taylor Messick
    The council received good news that the city has received an Aetna insurance premium rebate in the amount of $56,452.05. Council unanimously voted to put that money directly into the general fund as the governing body has recently expressed interest in building up the fund.

    With returning All-Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II running back Larry Wilson and a big and experienced offensive line, the Hornets' fate should be in good hands.
Hornet volleyball opens season 6-2 Randy Fisher
    With a new-to-them coach, the Valley Center High School volleyball team is off and running for 2018. The Hornets are 6-2 on the young campaign, including a win in their only Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II contest.

    The Valley Center High School soccer team started the season with a 6-0 win over Winfield at home Aug. 28.
Middle school volleyball does well in preseason tournaments The News staff
    Moving from the Prairie Hills League to the newly formed Wichita Suburban League, Valley's A-teams did well in preseason tournaments Aug. 25. The eighth-graders were first, and the seventh-graders were third.

    The varsity kicked things off Aug. 23 with a singles quad at Salina Central. The Hornets accumulated five team points, tying with Salina South for third. Newton finished one point and one spot ahead of Valley Center, while the host Mustangs eased to the top spot with eight points.

    Police were called to check the business at 120 S. Abilene Aug. 23. Unknown suspects broke into the business and took coins and caused damage to the change machine.

    The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said Tara Nicole Merriman was driving north on Ridge Road and attempted to turn west onto 101st when her vehicle left the road and rolled into the ditch. When crews arrived, the vehicle was upside down.
