Upgrades to greet students and staff Chris Strunk As part of the 2016 bond issue, every building in the Valley Center school district except for the high school received some sort of upgrade. Many improvements — like plumbing and electrical — are buried. Some are out front and bright — like the new electronic displays at each school.

Another wreck at 69th, Meridian The News staff On July 31, emergency crews responded to the intersection where a driver suffered minor injuries. The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said vehicles driven by Jason R. McClure and Mason Wagner collided. Wagner was cited for failing to yield the right-of-way.

City issues 13 permits in July The News staff The City of Valley Center issued 13 building permits during July for a total valuation of $269,730.

County race down to the wire Chris Strunk Incumbent Richard Ranzau of Wichita and challenger Hugh Nicks of Maize ended the night with an 87-vote separation.

Donut shop shoots for Sept. opening Chris Strunk Sophannarath “Pon" Toeur, who bought the property last September and expected to open The Hornets Nest donut shop in January, had a series of problems with contractors and projects during the past 11 months.

Man runs from officer The News staff Police said an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction at Sixth and Abilene. A man ran from the vehicle. Officers were unable to locate the man, but learned his name and where he was from.

Pool closes, Pooch Plunge cancelled Chris Strunk Originally scheduled to close Aug. 4, the Valley Center Recreation Commission decided to keep it open a week longer because school started a week later than normal this year.

Residents to weigh in on recycling Chris Strunk The city is putting together a short survey to determine whether curbside recycling is important.

School district property tax flat Chris Strunk Thanks to a bump in state aid, an increase in enrollment and a jump in assessed property valuation, the Valley Center school district plans to grow, spend more money and add programs in 2018-19, all while holding the line on taxes.
