Friends sign to play football Emmie Boese Valley Center High School seniors Caleb Rains and Aaron Coash signed letters of intent April 4 to play football this fall. Rains signed with Mid-America Nazarene and Coash signed with West Texas A&M University.

Golf team has two medalists at Collegiate, finishes fourth at Maize Taylor Messick Cason Berschauer led the team with a 78 and Wyatt Lange shot an 82. Both finished with medalist honors. Reed Pierce finished just behind them with an 85.

Hornet tennis records two wins and a second Randy Fisher It was another good week for the Valley Center High School tennis team as the Class 5A No. 2-ranked Hornets gear up for the postseason. The Hornets won tournaments April 23 at Topeka and April 19 at Salina South. They were second April 17 at Buhler.

Hornets find their offense, improve to 9-1-1 Emmie Boese Valley finished the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II matchup with Maize South in a 3-3 tie.

Hornets sweep league doubleheader Randy Fisher The Hornets did something at home against Andover they hadn't done since May 3, 2016: sweep a league doubleheader, 1-0 and 4-2.

Intern learns journalism The News staff Boese, a Valley Center High School senior who has been a student intern at The Ark Valley News since August, was named intern of the month for March through the school's internship program.

Softball team sweeps non-league doubleheader Chris Strunk The Valley Center High School softball team had a welcome break from a tough Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II schedule this week, capturing a couple of wins against Campus at home April 24.

Track team competes at Salina and Heights Taylor Messick The Valley Center High School track team visited Salina for an eight-team meet April 10. The girls finished third and the boys were fourth.

Valley Center’s regional assignments set The News staff Tennis will play May 4 at Salina Central High School. Other teams participating include Andover, Great Bend, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South and Wichita Heights.

Delgado trial moved to May 21 The News staff Delgado, a former Valley Center police officer who is accused of inappropriate relationships with teenage girls, was to face trial April 23. It was moved to May 21 in Sedgwick County District Court.

Leeker’s building for rent Chris Strunk Brad Tidemann with J.P. Weigand Realtors said Associated is looking to sublease the building and is “open to do anything but a grocery store."

Man convicted in deadly shooting The News staff Prosecutors said Phillips shot James L. Rotramel during an argument at a home in the 8300 block of North 94th West, which is west of Tyler and south of 85th North, about three miles west of Valley Center, on Feb. 12.

Parlor owner appeals conviction Chris Strunk Sharon Latimer, who was convicted of prostitution and running a massage business without a license in back-to-back Valley Center Municipal Court cases, appealed the convictions to district court. She was to have a jury trial earlier this year. However, that trial was moved to Aug. 21 at Latimer's request.

S.H.O.W. to host veterans lunch Emmie Boese S.H.O.W. will host the lunch from noon to 2 p.m. May 19 at McLaughlin Park. The students will serve a taco lunch to the veterans and their spouses for free. The general public is asked to make a $5 donation or more that goes to the S.H.OW. program.
