Town crowns Jon the city’s official ‘Keeper of the Rails’ Taylor Messick For many years, Jon Miller has walked beside Kechi's railroad tracks. He watches the trains intently and makes sure everything is running smoothly. Miller is a person with a disability, but it doesn't slow him down. Kechi residents may have noticed him trekking miles through town during the warm months. Miller said he does it because he loves trains.

Valley Center remains in Class 5A The News staff The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced enrollments and classifications for the 2017-18 school year, and Valley Center High School remained in Class 5A. Based upon Sept. 20 enrollment figures for all four grades, Valley Center has 849 students, four fewer than last year.

Valley doubles second at league Randy Fisher Defending Class 5A state champion Ark City easily won the league crown with 40 points. Tying for second were Andover Central and Goddard with 33 points each. Then came Maize South with 23, Valley Center 20, Eisenhower 18 and Andover 16.

Car hits side of middle school The News staff A driver who apparently suffered a medical issue crashed into two vehicles and pushed one into the Valley Center Middle School building Oct. 1.

Car show breaks own record Ron Black A total of 138 cars packed into downtown Sept. 29, breaking the total of 125 from last year. Keith Harimon, one of the Lions Club car show promoters, predicted that it was going to be the biggest and best yet, and he was right.

City issues 12 permits The News staff The City of Valley Center issued 12 building permits during September for a total valuation of $133,296.

Community center taking shape Chris Strunk City considers future projects in Lions Park

Cottage finds a home on Main St. Chris Strunk Amanda Maness and Taylor O'Neal opened The Cottage Market in downtown Valley Center late last month and had a chamber of commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 30 to officially mark its relocation from Kechi.

Paraplane has hard landing The News staff A powered parachute type of aircraft, called a paraplane, made a hard landing in a Valley Center neighborhood Sept. 29. Its pilot, a 71-year-old Wichita man, was not hurt.

School board to meet Oct. 9 The News staff The Valley Center school board will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the District Office. The board is expected to hear reports about site council, a life-saving presentation, individual plans of study, Kansas Report Card and estimated budget adjustments based on weightings.
