    David Gene Hensley, 64, Valley Center, died May 15, 2017. He was retired from the Boeing Aircraft Company.

    Galen Edward Hazen, 66, died May 3, 2017. He grew up in Valley Center.

    Laura M. (Day) Duncan, 86, of Clearwater, died May 13, 2017. She had lived in Valley Center for nearly 40 years.

    On May 11, the Kechi City Council unanimously approved an engineering agreement with PEC for a Baird Street improvement project.

Armed robbery at Subway The News staff
    An employee reported being robbed at gun point. The suspect was described as a black male with heavy build. The suspect was wearing a ski mask, all dark clothing and gloves.
Boil water advisory lifted Taylor Messick
    The advisory was issued because of an electrical failure that led to a loss of chlorine residual. Two failures occurred at the Chisholm Creek Utility Authority, which resulted in KDHE issuing the advisory. The first problem was that the injector pump for chlorine quit working. The other malfunction occurred in a computerized system that monitors the chlorine levels in the water and notifies the necessary parties if there is an issue. That system was down at the time of the injector pump issue and did not recognize or report any problems with the chlorine levels.
City issues 13 permits The News staff
    The City of Park City issued 13 building permits during April for a total valuation of $701,215.29. Of that number, four were for new home or duplex construction. Permits are listed by date they were issued, address, type of work and valuation:

    The 29th Challenge Games Track and Field competition will be held May 27 at Panther Stadium, 801 E. Madison in Derby. Track events start at 8:30 a.m. and the field events begin at 1 p.m.

Hornet signs to throw for K-State Chris Strunk
    No matter what happens from here, Taylor Latimer will leave Valley Center High School this month as one of the most decorated track and field athletes in the school's history.

    On May 12, the Valley Center High School track team competed in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II meet at Maize South. The boys won the meet for the second straight year and the girls placed fourth.

    The Hornets finished fourth as a team with 348 points and just missed a team bid to state. Salina Central, Salina South and Maize all finished ahead of the Hornets with 339 points each and had to break the tie by scoring the teams' fifth golfers.

    On May 7, three area students received the Citation Award from the Northside Bible Chapel Awana program in Kechi. The Citation Award is given to students who have completed all of the materials that are required in the Awana program, which is based in Streamwood, Ill.

Seventh boys, eighth girls fourth at league track meet The News staff
    The Valley Center Middle School track team wrapped up the 2017 season at the Pioneer League II meet May 9 in Andover.
Target shooting team finishes fourth in 1st year The News staff
    The first-year Valley Center High School clay target shooting team placed fourth out of five teams in its division during the regular season.
Valley Center falls in regional finals Randy Fisher
    Salina South edged the Hornets 6-5 in the championship game after they eased by ninth-ranked Salina Central 5-4 earlier in the day.
Valley rallies for third trip to state Randy Fisher
    The win puts Valley Center into the Class 5A state tournament, May 25 and 26, for the third straight year. The 19-3 Hornets should be seeded no worse than fourth at Two Rivers Youth Complex in Wichita. Pairings will be announced later this week.
Valley tennis brings home state medals Randy Fisher
    Hayden Brauer and Colby Swift in doubles and Garrett Rogers in singles brought home medals from last weekend's Class 5A state tennis tournament in Topeka. Brauer and Swift placed eighth, while Rogers was ninth. Last year, Brauer and Swift were 12th, while Rogers was 1-2 and out of the medals. Valley Center has not had two boys state placers in the same year since 2009.

    Morgan Wedekind of Valley Center claimed a Big 12 title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the conference championships May 12 through 14 in Lawrence.

Deadline approaches for local elections Chris Strunk
    The new timeline for local elections is underway as candidates have until June 1 to file for city and school district offices. If a primary election is needed, it will take place Aug. 1. The general election will be Nov. 7, with advance voting beginning Oct. 25.

    A Valley Center man arrested on a DUI charge while driving a lawn mower in Valley Center was found hurt in front of his garage six days later.

    A man accused of entering a Valley Center house uninvited May 12 and lying down on a couch that had children on it was taken to his mother's house to sober up.
Murder trial continued to July 24 Taylor Messick
    On May 15, a judge granted continuances to July 24 for Heidi Hillard, Jeff Hillard, Willie Morris and Alexandria Scott. A family member close to the case said he was told by a prosecutor that new evidence was potentially available and this could be the reason for the delay. The trial was originally set to begin in March.

    Pathway Church in Wichita is planning to launch a Valley Center campus this fall.
Stolen truck recovered The News staff
    A person of interest was taken into custody and a stolen truck was recovered May 10.
