Crime is hitting too close to home From what we have been told, the violent crimes that have occurred in and around Valley Center over the past six months have been targeted acts of brutality. We suppose there's some comfort in that assessment. However, when violence begets more violence, the victim circle widens.

Park City looks for efficiency in utility depts. Taylor Messick On April 11, Park City unanimously approved a contract for a mobile work order system. This continues the city's recent dedication to adopt environmentally friendly policies, but it will also allow the city's utility departments to operate more efficiently and better serve its customers.

Experiment travels 106,000 ft. Chris Strunk Students at Valley Center Middle School launched something similar to a weather balloon into space April 7 and it landed six hours later in a hay field about 120 miles away after doing a loop and reaching an altitude of 106,000 feet.

Hornet softball team off to a hot start Chris Strunk The Hornets won their first six games, including four key Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II contests, by a combined score of 46-13. And they're showing no signs of letting up.

Hornet tennis finishes fourth at Andover Randy Fisher At Andover, Valley Center tied for fourth in the team standings. Eisenhower won with 27 points, followed by Andover Central with 20, Andover Blue 19, Valley Center and Wellington 14, Hesston 12, Andover White 8 and Wichita Independent 2.

Hornets drop three of four to start season Taylor Messick and Randy Fisher After its season-opening doubleheader was postponed twice and is yet to be played, the Valley Center High School baseball team finally got things going last week. The Hornets split at home April 11 against Ark City and lost both games April 7 at Maize South.

Valley Center hosts 13-team track meet Taylor Messick The Hornets hosted the Valley Center Invitational for high school track on April 7. The boys placed seventh with 45 points and the girls were sixth with 55. Other schools who competed were Ark City, Andale, Andover, Andover Central, Bishop Carroll, Eisenhower, Garden City, Goddard, Hutch, Maize South, Newton and Winfield.

Valley golfers take second at Sand Creek Taylor Messick The Valley Center High School golf team had a busy week with competitions on back-to-back days. They finished sixth at Andover Central's Terradyne on April 10 and second at Newton's Sand Creek the next day. Following the success of these two events, Valley Center is currently ranked fourth in Class 5A.
