Golfers place fifth in Andover Taylor Messick Although the weather conditions this week weren't all that golf friendly, the Valley Center High School team teed up at Crestview Country Club in Andover on April 3 for its first competition of the season.

Hornet softball seeks return trip to state Randy Fisher After back-to-back trips to the Class 5A state tournament, the Valley Center High School softball team hopes to three-peat this spring. If you base their success on experience, the Hornets are in a great position to do just that.

Hornet tennis second at Emporia, first at home Randy Fisher The top three teams were separated by three points. The Bulldogs scored 51 team points, narrowly edging the Hornets with 49. Lawrence Free State, sixth in 6A, was third with 48. Rounding out the rest of the field were Blue Valley Stilwell with 44 points, Bishop Miege 37, Andover 21, Emporia 16 and Shawnee Heights 4.

Tennis team could be among state’s best Chris Strunk Coach Dean Schulz, who is in his 35th year at the helm of the Hornets, said a top-three finish for the team at the state tournament is a realistic goal.

VCMS tennis team starts season on the right foot The News staff On March 30, the Hornets went 10-8 against McPherson in the upper-tier matches and compiled a 15-19 record in all matches. Winners in doubles matches included Ayden Lewis-Leger McDaniel, Garrett Fitch-Aaron Wiebe and Skyler Leland-Nolan Granger.

Burn ban during April The News staff New open burn permits will not be issued during April and no current permit holders will be allowed to conduct open burns after March 31. Open burns can resume after April 30.

Man arrested after short chase The News staff Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at Meeds and Fifth in Valley Center. The police officer knew the driver had a suspended license, so he asked the driver to step out of the vehicle.

School board to meet April 10 The News staff The Valley Center school board will meet at 7 p.m. April 10 at the District Office. The board is scheduled to hear a legislative update from Sen. Carolyn McGinn and Rep. Steve Huebert, a West Site Council report, an update on senior parking stalls at the high school, about the Kansas Education System Accreditation and plans for summer food service.
