Lions’ longevity should be applauded The club has been a prolific Valley Center booster. One of the city's busiest public parks carries the Lions name as does one of the most iconic public structures, the gazebo in Lions Park.

61st Street bridge project on track Taylor Messick The bridge closed on Dec. 5 after it was deemed unsafe for continued use. Tests revealed that the bridge was outdated in addition to being badly damaged by excessive flooding in July. The bridge was estimated to be re-opened between February and March, depending on weather delays.

Property owners clash at Kechi council Taylor Messick The ongoing dispute is over a piece of newly purchased property northwest of K-254 and 63rd Street. Last year at a city auction, Buck Alley purchased a number of lots that are grouped to the north of Kechi Road. Directly north of that property lives Donna Frick.

DECA students do well at regionals The News staff Valley Center High School students competed at a DECA regional competition at Newman University last week. Several qualified for state competition in Overland Park in March.

Hornets fall to 7-6 with loss to Mavericks Spencer O'Daniel The Hornets gave everything they had in the fourth quarter, but never caught the Mavericks and fell 48-44.

Hornets third at multi-state tournament Jeremiah Strunk The Valley Center High School wrestling team went to Garden City Jan. 28 and 29 to compete in one of the toughest tournaments it will see all year, the Rocky Welton Invitational. Valley placed third overall out of 31 teams, and was the highest placing Kansas school at the tournament. The Hornets got the opportunity to wrestle against teams from as far away as New Mexico.

Scouts compete in Pinewood Derby The News staff Valley Center Cub Scout Pack 494 had its annual Pinewood Derby Races Jan. 21. Nearly 150 boys, parents, grandparents and friends attended to watch the races and to have a fundraiser lunch.

VCMS boys enter league tournament The News staff The Valley Center Middle School boys' basketball teams finished the regular season during the past week and will play in the Pioneer League II Tournament starting this weekend.

VCMS girls lose to Mac, split with Derby The News staff Valley Center will host the Pioneer League II tournament starting Feb. 4. The eighth-graders are 0-6 in the league and seeded seventh. They will play 5-1 Eisenhower at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 4 in the north gym at the middle school.

VCMS wrestlers begin season The News staff The Valley Center Middle School's 2017 wrestling season is off and running. The Hornets hosted a tournament Jan. 28 and traveled to Newton Jan. 24 for a double dual. The Hornets recorded four individual tournament champions in its annual event.

Valley Center 5-8 after back-to-back losses Spencer O'Daniel and Ray Strunk The Hornets shot only 26 percent, leading to a lopsided 16-point loss, 65-49. The loss was on the heels of a heartbreaking overtime loss to Hutchinson last week.

Valley Center fourth at Mac tourney Spencer O'Daniel and Chris Strunk The Hornets finished in the top half of the eight-team Mid America Classic tournament in McPherson Jan. 26 through 28.

Father-daughter dance an animal league fundraiser The News staff The Valley Center Animal League will host its fourth annual father-daughter dinner and dance Feb. 4 at Valley Center High School. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner is served at 6:45.

‘Kindness’ photo goes viral Taylor Messick The challenge was started by an international nonprofit organization called Kids for Peace in 2008. The mission of the group is to cultivate every child's ability to foster peace through cross-cultural experiences and hands-on arts, service and environmental projects. The point of challenge is to encourage students to show various extra acts of kindness toward one another for one week out of the year.
