Time to end budget mayhem Every year, it seems, the state is in some sort of economic distress. There's never enough money. Shortfalls have become the status quo. It's a depressing scenario for businesses and citizens.

District splits conferences Chris Strunk The Valley Center school board on Jan. 9 approved a calendar that separates conferences for secondary schools from ones for elementaries. Otherwise, start and end dates as well as spring and winter breaks are largely the same as 2016-17.

Police tase man after vehicle crash The News staff Police were forced to subdue a motorist to place him in an ambulance after a two-vehicle wreck Jan. 5 in the 700 block of East 77th North.

Teacher finds success with Premier Driving School Taylor Messick Perry Warden is in his first year as a behavior management teacher at Valley Center High School where he works with developmentally disabled students. He is also the co-owner of Newton's Premier Driving School — which will be opening two new locations this week.
