Bel Aire approves storage and retail facility Taylor Messick After years of inactivity, the northwest corner of 45th Street and Woodlawn in Bel Aire will finally see some development.

Bel Aire veteran selected as finalist in charity construction program Taylor Messick Jamie Luallen says her neighbor James Parks has been in need of a new roof since she moved in next door to him nine years ago. Luallen said Parks is a kind neighbor and there's no one more deserving than him. She said he has tried to make improvements to his home but lacks the finances to fix his deteriorating roof.

Officers protecting citizens with traffic laws I would like to address the person who wrote the statement in What's on Your Mind Sept. 1 saying he or she thinks should investigate the police quota system or minimum performance standard at this time.

VCRC deserves a pat on the back A big thank you goes out to Steve Geddes, director of the Valley Center Recreation Commission, and his staff. In the past couple of weeks Abilene Elementary, Valley Center Middle School and Valley Center High School were all able to host amazing events at the Valley Point Golf Course. Abilene's Hornet Hustle and the middle school and high school's cross country meets had great attendance, while showcasing the hard work that Steve and his crew accomplished in putting together a beautiful course.

One arrested after standoff in Park City The News staff Just before 10 a.m., Park City officers responded to a report of burglary of a shed in progress in the 6200 block of North Independence. Witnesses told officers that the suspect entered a residence, prompting a standoff.

Cross country girls second, boys fourth at new home course Taylor Messick On Sept. 6 the Valley Center High School cross country team defended its new home turf at Valley Point Golf Course for the first time. Head coach Amber Russell said the course was well received by the athletes and coaches.

Dollar General donates to Wheatland The News staff These grants are part of more than $4.5 million in youth literacy grants awarded to about 1,000 organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves. Given at the beginning of the academic school year, these grants are aimed at supporting teachers, schools and organizations with resources to strengthen and enhance literacy instruction.

Golfers start season with encouraging performances Taylor Messick An inexperienced Valley Center High School girls' golf team got off to a positive start on Sept. 1 in Augusta. There were seven teams and 27 golfers at the Augusta Invitational; four schools were 5A and three were 4A.

Hornets get tournament win after season-opening loss Jeremiah Strunk The Valley Center High School soccer team won the first game of the Maize South Tournament against Salina South, 3-2, in a penalty kick Sept. 6, five days after losing its season-opener in double overtime.

Middle school tennis rebounds with five wins The News staff The Hornets won one match in their season-opener Sept. 1 and turned around to win five matches in their second outing five days later.

Middle school volleyball splits along grades The News staff Each eighth-grade team is 2-0 on the young season. Seventh-grade “A" is 1-1, while the “B" team is 0-2.

Students get money for buckling seat belts The News staff As part of the Bucks for Buckles campaign, they were stationed at the south entrance to Valley Center High School to catch parents, staff and students driving to school. If drivers were wearing a seat belt, they were given a $1 bill. If not, they were given a flier reminding them of the importance of buckling up.

Tennis player gets royal treatment after winning essay contest Chris Strunk Last weekend, Taylor and 10 other young tennis players from across the country were recognized in New York City for the essays they wrote about Gibson's impact on tennis and the impact tennis has had on their own lives.
