School bond projects needed The project includes storm-safe shelters that double as multi-purpose space at Wheatland, the intermediate school and the middle school. It also includes a redesigned entry into Wheatland, a project that, unfortunately, was bypassed in the 2008 bond.

Park City council tackles exotic animals issue David Dinell Park City officials have had a number of domestic animal topics come before them, including keeping pigs and goats as pets. Now they have a new one: exotic animals, creatures such as anteaters, spider monkeys, lemurs, flying squirrels, marmosets and more.

Hornets lose league openers on the road Randy Fisher After splitting a doubleheader last week, the Valley Center High School baseball team opened league play April 12 at Andover Central. The Jaguars, ranked fifth in Class 4A-I, swept the Hornets, rolling 9-2 in the opener before holding on for a 4-3 win in the nightcap. Valley is 1-5 overall and 0-2 in AVCTL II play.

Hornets tie for first at Andover, finish second at Campus Randy Fisher With 14 team points, Valley Center placed first in an April 12 quadrangular at Campus. The host Colts were second with 10 points, followed by Chaparral with 3 and Augusta 1.

Senior signs with Pratt’s rodeo team Chris Strunk Valley Center High School senior Kelli Bright signed a letter of intent March 29 to join the rodeo team at Pratt Community College this fall.

Shelton turns team over to assistant Chris Strunk Shelton, head coach of the Valley Center High School wrestling program for the past 19 seasons, has resigned. He will remain a teacher at the high school, and he wants to maintain a connection with the program.

Sprinter returns to capture gold at home Chris Strunk On April 8, DeMarco King returned to the track after a long recovery from an ankle injury and won the 100-meter dash at the Valley Center Invitational.

Streak of dominance continues for Hornets Taylor Messick Only one game remains before the Hornets begin a stretch of six consecutive games against Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II opponents. Though the true test still lies ahead, the Hornets couldn't have handled their business much better through the first portion of their schedule.

2016 VCHS Alumni Banquet set for June 4 Ron Black The first Saturday of June is about eight weeks away and planning for the 2016 Valley Center High School Alumni Banquet is getting in gear. The Alumni Committee is encouraging the class coordinators to give their classmates a heads-up for this year's banquet, which is June 4. Reservation check-in starts at 5 p.m. at the high school commons room, 93rd North and Meridian, and dinner will start at 6 p.m.

Community health fair set The News staff The Valley Center school district and the Valley Center Recreation Commission will host a community health fair from 1 to 4 p.m. April 18 in the north gym at the middle school, 800 N. Meridian.

House fires: Minor damage, false alarm Chris Strunk Valley Center firefighters responded to reports of two house fires last week. One caused minor damage. The other was a false alarm.

Minor injuries in wreck Police and fire crews respond to a two-vehicle wreck at 69th North and Meridian April 7.

Woman arrested with children in vehicle Chris Strunk Amanda K. Seigle was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of driving with a suspended license, DUI and three counts of DUI with a child in the vehicle. Her three children — 2-year-old son, 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old daughter — were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. There were not in car seats, police said.

Woman found alive hours after falling into cellar Chris Strunk Ruby Kaelson-Pike, 95, was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where she is recovering from a head wound and surgery this week on her broken back.
