New policy governs city council replacement David Dinell It's been a months-long process, but the Bel Aire City Council finally has its replacement policy in place. By a 5-0 vote, the council approved the framework for appointing a new member at its March 1 meeting.

EUGENE ROUSH Eugene F. Roush, 94, formerly of Valley Center, died Feb. 29, 2016. He was a retired Mobil Oil maintenance repairman.

GEORGE MARTIN George John Martin, 81, of Park City, died Feb. 22, 2016. He was a retired Beech Aircraft electrical engineer.

GERALDINE POWELL Geraldine Powell, 90, of Flower Mound, Texas, died March 6, 2016. A longtime Valley Center resident, she was a former supervisor at New Horizons.

JANICE VANCE Janice R. Vance, 67, of Wichita, died Feb. 20, 2016. She was retired receptionist and bookkeeper for Western Testing, Advance Products and Diesel Equipment.

MILDRED PATTERSON Mildred Roberta (Stauffer) Patterson, 96, died Feb. 29, 2016. She retired after teaching for 42 1/2 years.

PHILLIP SCHMIDT Phillip Howard Schmidt, 76, of Park City, died Feb. 18, 2016. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and welder.

SCOTT KLIEWER Scott T. Kliewer, 53, of Wichita, died Feb. 17, 2016. He was an over-the-road truck driver.

Doing what we can to stop violence? A lone gunman killed three people and wounded 14 others at Excel Industries in Hesston and on a road between Newton and Hesston. The shooter, Cedric Ford, was shot and killed by law enforcement authorities.

Kechi council approves street expansion plan David Dinell At its Feb. 11 meeting, the Kechi City Council welcomed Meter Engineers, a 31-employee company, with its plans to move to southeast Kechi. Now, at its Feb. 25 meeting, the council followed up on that development by approving a plan to expend Tigua Street from Rock to Woodland.

Feeling the budget pinch We can feel the budget pinch in Valley Center schools. As a second-grade teacher at West, we do our best to provide what kids need, but as our enrollment grows so does our need for funds. As we consolidate our classrooms to make room for a fourth section next year every room will be at capacity.

Flood plain, property taxes On April 21, 2015, the people of Valley Center were told by letter from Warren Utecht, community Development director, that the 100-year flood plain for Valley Center had been updated and that the engineering firm, AMEC, would be available to discuss the implications and impact on property owners at the Valley Center Middle Schools on North Meridian on May 11, 2015.

Hope in the Valley to host horse care classes for beginners The News staff Hope in the Valley Equine Rescue & Sanctuary in Valley Center will host a beginning horsemanship class on March 6. The purpose of the class is to teach basic horse-handling skills to individuals who have not spent a lot of time around horses, or those who would like to brush up on their skills. The class is open to people of all ages, but anyone under 18 needs to be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Hornet boys fall to Maize South on Senior Night Randy Fisher When Valley Center traveled to Maize South Feb. 2, the Hornets' fourth-quarter rally from an 18-point deficit fell short. When Valley Center hosted Maize South Feb. 25 for Senior Night, there would be no final rally for the Hornets. The Mavericks took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter and pulled away to win 82-61.

Hornet looking for a second chance in football Chris Strunk The Valley Center High School senior, who missed all of his final season as a Hornet because of an ankle injury, signed a letter of intent Feb. 11 to play at Hutchinson Community College.

Record-setting tackler signs with Tabor Chris Strunk Crawford, who holds the Valley Center High School record for most tackles in a season, signed a letter of intent Feb. 25 to play for Tabor College in Hillsboro this fall, while working on a pastoral theology degree.
