    The former chief and a third former officer of the department were indicted April 28 on federal charges.
Tree board in Bel Aire wants to branch out David Dinell
    Spring is the time for planting and gardening. With that in mind, the April 21 meeting of the Bel Aire City Council had a decidedly horticultural atmosphere with a proclamation declaring Arbor Day 2015, a report from the Tree Board and a proposal for the city to provide the board with funding for seeds and supplies.

4x800 sets season-best time The News staff
    The Valley Center High School girls' 4x800-meter relay team placed 17th out of 35 at the KU Relays last week. The team had its season-best time of 10:03.
Baseball team drops two to Salina South Randy Fisher
    The weather in Salina for Valley Center High School's April 21 nonleague doubleheader was beautiful. A sharp contrast to the weather April 17 when the Hornets were rained out at Andover.
Boys finish sixth in home track meet Taylor Messick
    On April 17, Valley Center High School hosted a rather large track meet and welcomed stiff competition from some of the area's top schools. Teams that visited the meet included Bishop Carroll, Andale, Derby, Hutch, Maize South, El Dorado, McPherson, Winfield, Cheney, both Andover schools and both Goddard schools.

    Appearance can sometimes be deceiving. Take the results from April 21's Andover Central Invitational at Sierra Hills in which the Valley Center High School junior varsity golf team tangled with some of the area's top teams.
Hornets lose league opener to Andover Central Taylor Messick
    Sometimes great defense can be enough to come away with a win, and that was certainly the case for Andover Central on April 20. The Jaguar defense absolutely stifled the Valley Center High School soccer team in a 1-0 loss.
Hornets sweep tennis quads at Buhler, Circle Randy Fisher
    The Valley Center High School tennis team won quads at Buhler April 21 and at Circle April 16.
Junior varsity tennis players have a busy week The News staff
    The Valley Center High School junior varsity tennis team finished third April 20 at Hutchinson; entered two complete teams in its own meet April 14, with one of them placing third; and won the Chaparral quad April 11.

    On April 10, Boy Scout Troop 494, chartered at the First United Methodist Church, inducted another Eagle Scout into the ranks of the troop.

Middle school track team does well at three meets The News staff
    Eighth-grader Zach Williams had quite a week. At the Richard Lawrence Relays in Wellington April 16, Williams won the 100- and 200-meter hurdles after winning the two events at Andover Central on April 14. Williams also took first in the long jump at Andover Central.
