    Barbara K. Robel, 71, of Manhattan, formerly of Valley Center, died April 4, 2015.
BERTHENA NISSEN
    Berthena (Beard) Nissen, 87, of Wichita, died April 3, 2015. She was a homemaker and previously worked as an office secretary at the Valley Center Junior High School. She was retired from the Coleman Company where she had worked in payroll data entry.
DOROTHY ARICK
    Dorothy Faye (Crawford) Arick, 94, of Valley Center, died April 4, 2015. She was a retired registered nurse.
JOHN THOMAS
    John Elbert Thomas, age 82, died April 1, 2015. He worked for the City of Wichita Forestry Department and was the director of Sedgwick County Park and Public Works. He retired from the Kansas Turnpike Authority as a landscaper.

    Peggy Lynn (Gourley) Seaburn, 62, died April 2, 2015. She was a daycare provider.

    Robert Brice “Bob" Stanek, 90, of Valley Center, died April 8, 2015. He was a retired pharmacist.

    Tobbie Jean (Kelley) Callaway, 43, of Valley Center, died April 10, 2015. She was a receptionist for Farmer's Insurance.
WILMA WIECHMAN
    Wilma Lucile (Moormann) Weichman, 89, of Valley Center, died April 11, 2015. She was a homemaker.

    Students qualified by competing at the state conference March 8 through 10 in Overland Park. A total of 24 VCHS students participated in state, and 22 earned medals in the top 10 of their events.

    On March 23, Boy Scout Troop 494, chartered to the First United Methodist Church, held a Court of Honor.

Middle school opens with mixed results at Ark City The News staff
    Valley Center Middle School's tennis team opened the season March 30 with a loss at Ark City. In singles, the Hornets won six and lost 12. They did better in doubles, posting six wins against three losses.

Valley Center golf team off to rough start David Dinell
    That placed it 13th out of the 14-school field at Crestview Country Club's par 72 North Course. 
Valley tennis second at Emporia behind 6A power Randy Fisher
    Their most impressive performance of the season was April 4 at Emporia, Valley's first 16-team bracketed tournament of the year. The Hornets scored 44 points to finish second behind the 52 points scored by Blue Valley, Class 6A's No. 5 team. Andover finished third with 37 points, followed by Lawrence Free State with 36, Salina South 31, Ark City 27 and Emporia 24. Shawnee Heights had one.

Big Larry’s wins big at Baconfest Chris Strunk
    Big Larry's Burgers in Valley Center won the people's choice and judges' choice awards at the first Baconfest March 28 at Hartman Arena in Park City. The trophies are on prominent display inside Larry and Heather Hall's restaurant at 328 S. Meridian.
City issues 19 permits in March The News staff
    The City of Valley Center issued 19 building and roofing permits during March for a total valuation of $551,199. Of that number, eight were for new residences, duplexes in the Ridgefield subdivision north of Fifth and east of Kessler.
City says it’s sorry for mishandling road changes Chris Strunk
    Mayor Mike McNown, who was as surprised as most city leaders when the contractor working on the reconstruction of Meridian and Ford streets and the city engineer decided to close the intersection of Main and Meridian about two months earlier than originally proposed, admitted the city didn't adequately communicate the dramatic change to the business community.
Council defeats beer party proposal Chris Strunk
    Because no one on the eight-member city council would offer a motion April 7, a proposal to allow alcohol consumption at the facility in Lions Park died.

    With 75 percent of the vote (224-60), Laurie Dove, a writer and small business owner, won the race over Jaque Davis, a paraprofessional in the Valley Center school district.
Fire damages Valley Center home Chris Strunk
    Valley Center firefighters responded to 600 Redbud Court about 4:30 p.m. The home is in the Ridgefield subdivision, which is north of Fifth between Interurban and Kessler.
