Kechi preparing final draft of 2040 Comprehensive Plan Matt Heilman
    With its focus on long-term growth, the City of Kechi is moving forward with its development of a 25-year-comprehensive plan that is meant to serve as guide for where the city would like to be by the year 2040. The proposed final draft of the 92-page 2040 Comprehensive Plan is accessible to citizens on Kechi's website, www.kechiks.com.
Kechi to seek funding for road construction project Matt Heilman
    The Kechi City Council took action at its Dec. 11 meeting that is meant to support the ongoing construction on the city's land along the K-254 corridor. The council approved a work order with Professional Engineering Consultants to file an application for the Kansas Department of Transportation to fund a frontage road that will allow for smoother access to properties located near K-254 and Woodlawn.

    The Valley Center Middle School boys' basketball teams had mixed results in Pioneer League Division II play against the two schools from Goddard during the past week. Eisenhower swept the Hornet “A" teams in Goddard Dec. 11, but Valley Center defeated Goddard at home Dec. 15.

    The Valley Center Middle School girls' basketball program took on its first two league opponents in the past week, facing Goddard Eisenhower at home Dec. 11 before challenging Goddard on the road Dec. 15.
Hornets win Cheney title, fall to Goddard Randy Fisher
    The Valley Center girls won their third straight Cheney Classic championship with a 41-34 win Dec. 11 over Cheney and a 34-26 victory Dec. 13 over Hutchinson Trinity in the championship game. They followed that Dec. 16 with a 38-24 league loss at Goddard.

    The Valley Center High School boys' basketball team partnered with Kansas Gas Service Dec. 6 and spent the morning at the Kansas Food Bank in downtown Wichita.
SHOW students send care packages The News staff
    SHOW students packed 18 boxes for Kansas National Guard soldiers in the 35th Infantry Division out of Fort Leavenworth. The boxes were mailed to soldiers who were deployed to Kosovo in the fall. The packages are expected to arrive before Christmas.

Valley Center gets first win of season Randy Fisher
    After losing its first four games of the year, Valley Center's boys bounced back in style with a 62-60 double-overtime win Dec. 16 at Goddard. In the Cheney Classic, the Hornets dropped a 36-31 decision Dec. 11 to Cheney and a 43-42 heartbreaker Dec. 13 to Hutchinson Trinity.

    On the K-2 team, Corben Burgess placed sixth, Camdon Blunck 13th, Brec Burgess 18th and Madison Bastow 20th. Clayton Garcia from Maize Virtual Preparatory School placed 14th.

    A busy three-day stretch saw the Valley Center High School wrestling team make strides in the early season to improve its overall dual record to 10-3. The Hornets lost their first Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II dual, 45-9, Dec. 11 at home against Goddard and finished in fourth place among 18 teams with a 6-1 dual record at the Eagle Invitational Dec. 12 and 13 in Colby.

City OKs holiday pay policy Chris Strunk
    Under a longtime employee benefit policy, patrol officers who work 10-hour shifts received an eight-hour day off if they worked on one of nine holidays. The problem was, they had to either work two extra hours or dip into their vacation time to reach a 40-hour work week.

    Valley Center residents may see the construction of a new community center in the southeast corner of Lions Park by this time next year but it will take community involvement and city council support to make it happen, Valley Center community development director Warren Utecht said.
