Lifetree Café expands to Sundays The News staff Victory in Christ Fellowship will expand its Lifetree Café to Sunday evenings at the Valley Center Community Building, 316 E. Clay, starting at 6 p.m. Jan. 26.

Wholesale Fireworks expanding with Bel Aire building Matt Heilman At its Jan. 21 meeting, the Bel Aire City Council passed a resolution that essentially, OK'd the issuance of industrial revenue bonds meant to pave the way for Wholesale Fireworks to purchase an existing building in the city. The building, located just northwest of 37th North and Woodlawn, is an 8,000-square-foot structure that is the former home of Porter Paints. The building will be the latest addition for Wholesale Fireworks' presence in the area that also includes air-conditioned buildings in Valley Center, Haysville, Towanda and Andover as well as about 60 tents.

Kechi man charged with distributing child porn Matt Heilman A Kechi man could face more than 20 years in prison after being charged with distributing child pornography. A news release from the office of U.S. District Attorney Barry Grissom identified the man as 33-year-old Jaime Menchaca. Grissom said the pornography was mainly from Menchaca's computer at work at Highland Dairy in Wichita.

House fire contained to a bedroom The News staff Nobody was hurt and damage was contained to a bedroom in a house fire called in a little after 8 p.m. Jan. 13 in the 1400 block of East Evanston in Park City.

Park City Pride to host seminar on cyber safety The News staff The Park City Pride Committee is hosting a seminar on how people can protect themselves and their families from cyberbullying and Internet crimes with a pair of free informational programs at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 and 26 in the Park City Public Library.

4-H teams find success in 2013 The News staff Sedgwick County 4-H Meat Judging and Livestock Skillathon team members reached a new pinnacle of success during 2013 season. The teams brought home two state champion team titles and three reserve national champion team titles, a feat never achieved by a Kansas team before them in these events.

Hornet senior signs to run cross country and track at Friends Matt Heilman Katie Martini got faster every year in four varsity seasons on the Valley Center High School cross country team. During her senior season last fall, Martini improved her average times in 4-kilometer races by nearly a minute. She showed a consistent ability to break the 17-minute barrier and to medal in competitive races. On Jan. 10, Martini signed her letter of intent to run cross country and track at Friends University next year. She also competes on the Hornet track team where her specialty is the 800-meter run.

Hornets wrestlers go 2-3 at Kapaun dual tournament Matt Heilman With an open date on its schedule the Valley Center High School wrestling team put itself up to another test. The Hornets have been able to take advantage of practice time to correct mistakes, but they also benefit from wrestling opponents they're likely to see again in the postseason.

January Jam features ranked teams Randy Fisher Two of Class 6A's finest, Blue Valley Northwest and Wichita Southeast, highlight the field of this year's January Jam boys' basketball tournament to be held Jan. 23 through 25 at Valley Center High School.

VCMS boys take care of Haysville The News staff The Hornets will play at Derby Jan. 23 and will host Rose Hill Jan. 27 before playing at Maize Jan. 30. The “B" teams will compete in a tournament at Goddard Eisenhower Jan. 25.

VCMS girls throttle Haysville in sweep The News staff The Valley Center Middle School girls' basketball dominated Haysvile to complete the sweep at home Jan 16. The eighth-grade girls' 27-point win moved their overall record to 8-1. The seventh-graders improved to 3-6 and broke a five-game losing streak with a 28-point victory and near shutout.
