Bel Aire takes advantage of marketing opportunity with realtors Matt Heilman The City of Bel Aire is looking to strike while the iron is hot. The city has the attention of developers and realtors with its available land and the land's potential use. Slowly, but surely, plans have been put in place for construction to replace open fields. And recently, several plans have followed through with action as the city has welcomed new homes and construction on new businesses.

Work picking up on medical development in Bel Aire Matt Heilman It won't be long before the doctors are in. At its Oct. 1 meeting, the Bel Aire City Council took action to approve sanitary sewer and water distribution improvements for the future home of Rock Ridge Family Medicine and approved similar improvements, plus paving work for the Tierra Verde development and the Concierge Surgical Recover Center, which is part of the development's second phase

Valley Center worth the risk Paul Eden, who has a track record of successful business ventures in Valley Center, plans to purchase the former Phillips 66 station on the southeast corner of Main and Meridian. Eden, who owns a used car lot across the street, plans to expand his business onto the 100 S. Meridian location and keep both places open.

Kechi council approves new small business grant Matt Heilman Kechi city leaders received recognition for their plans to implement an incentive to grow their business community. At its Sept. 26 meeting, the city council cemented the plans with the approval of the Kechi New Small Business Grant.

Kechi resident brings dog complaint to city Matt Heilman Kechi resident Chad Crittenden approached the city council in search of more peace and quiet in his home on Cherokee Court. The master patrolman with the Kansas Highway Patrol has a baby at home and would like something to be done to lower the decibels coming from nearby yards.

Hornet football team to travel to Ark City Chris Strunk The Hornets are searching for their first win of the season and first since the sixth week of the 2012 campaign.

Hornets battle through mud in rough meet at Rim Rock Matt Heilman The rains came down. The course was muddy and slippery making the long down hill parts of the race as difficult as the uphill challenges. Some runners slipped and others had trouble keeping their shoes on their feet after running through thick puddles.

Hornets fall short in three home games Matt Heilman The record will show that the Valley Center High School boys' soccer team dropped three more games to sit at 1-9 on the season. But Hornet coach Jeff Burger has been encouraged by his team's recent play. In a recent string of home games, the Hornets hung tough with Rose Hill Sept. 26 in a 4-0 loss to one of the best teams in Class 4A and lost a heartbreaker, 1-0 to Campus Sept. 30 in a game that the Hornets outplayed the Colts.

JV golfers fifth at Eisenhower tourney The News staff The Valley Center High School junior varsity girls' golf team battled windy conditions and fast greens to finish fifth in a Sept. 26 eight-team tournament hosted by Goddard Eisenhower at Wichita's Tex Consolver Golf Course.

Tennis team prepares for postseason play The News staff The Valley Center High School tennis team is preparing for the postseason. The Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II meet will be Oct. 7 at Maize South, followed by the regional and state tournaments.

VCMS tennis playing strong down the stretch The News staff The Valley Center Middle School girls' tennis team extended its winning streak to five duals with wins at Prairie Hills and at home against Wellington and Winfield. On Oct. 1, the Hornets moved their overall dual record to 6-2-1 by winning 18 of 21 total matches against Winfield.

VCMS volleyball teams have mixed success against Goddard The News staff All four squads were in action twice during the past week. At Goddard, both “B" teams and the seventh-grade “A" team lost Oct. 1, while the eighth-grade “A" team won. Against Haysville, both eighth-grade teams were victorious while the seventh-graders split Sept. 26.

Volleyball team to return to action Randy Fisher After more than a week off from competition, the Valley Center volleyball team returns to the court with two upcoming triangulars. At 17-2, the Hornets are eighth in the Class 5A poll from the Kansas Volleyball Association that came out Sept. 25. A new poll came out Oct. 2, but not in time for inclusion in this week's paper.

West students jam to a world record Matt Heilman Students from West Elementary School took part in a successful world record attempt in the school's gymnasium Sept. 26. Students and teachers at the school were part of 39,141 Kansans who participated in the JAMin' Minute World Record Routine. In the United States, 1,354,715 people participated in the one-minute fitness routine, with Kansas having the third best state representation behind West Virginia and Colorado.

Enrollment varies for local schools Matt Heilman Valley Center schools have 2,767 students enrolled this year, the most in the history of the district, Superintendent Cory Gibson said. The mark is an increase of 45 students from last year.
