    Commissioners, in the end, should vote to uphold Valley Center's annexation of two neighborhoods on the city's west side. It's the right decision.

Kechi
Fire causes extensive damage to house Matt Heilman
    No one was injured, but a house was heavily damaged in a June 9 house fire at a farmhouse in the 8700 block of East 69th North near the intersection of 69th North and Rock Road. The home, just northeast of Kechi, had a Valley Center address.
Sculpture honors memory of Kechi restaurant owner Chris Strunk
    The City of Kechi dedicated a memorial to a longtime community leader and restaurant owner. In a June 9 ceremony, a metal and glass sculpture called “Geno's Song" was dedicated on the south side of Kechi's city park overlooking the pond.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING AND OF ISSUANCE OF TAXABLE INDUSTRIAL REVENUE BONDS
    Public notice is hereby given that the City Council of the City of Park City, Kansas (the “City"), will conduct a public hearing on June 25, 2013 at 7:00p.m., or as soon thereafter as may be heard at City Hall, 6110 N. Hydraulic in the City of Park City, in regard to the issuance by the City of its Taxable Industrial Revenue Bonds (Midwest Scrap Management, Inc.), in an aggregate principal amount of not to exceed $26,000,000 (the “Bonds") and in regard to an exemption from ad valorem taxation of property constructed or purchased with the proceeds of such Bonds.  The Bonds are proposed to be issued by the City under authority of K.S.A. 12‑1740 et seq., as amended, to provide funds for acquiring, constructing and installing a scrap metal processing facility located on 45th Street between I-135 and Broadway Street in the City.  The City further intends to lease such facility to Midwest Scrap Management, Inc., a Missouri corporation, or its assigns.  The governing body of the City will not adopt an ordinance authorizing the issuance of such revenue bonds until said public hearing has been concluded.

    A RESOLUTION FINDING THAT THE STRUCTURES LOCATED AT 6435 WEST PARK VIEW ARE DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE AND DIRECTING THAT THE OWNER(S) OF SAID STRUCTURES REPAIR OR DEMOLISH THE SAME WITHIN THIRTY (30) DAYS.

No change expected in Park City fireworks rules Matt Heilman
    Every year, a few dogs will whimper or seek cover, a few residents won't like the disturbance to the peace and unfortunately, some amateur pyrotechnicians won't be considerate of their neighbors. But the Fourth of July only comes once a year and when looking at its total population, Park City doesn't receive many fireworks complaints.
Project to affect I-135 bridge over 53rd The News staff
    A Kansas Department of Transportation project to repair bridges on I-135 over 53rd North will restrict traffic on I-135 to one lane for each direction for two months. Set-up of traffic control signs and lane closure equipment for the one-half-mile work zones will begin on June 17 and lane closures should be in place on June 18.
Young business professional fills vacant council seat Matt Heilman
    Chris Johns sees “a lot of good stuff" going on in Park City and the young business professional and family man wants to be part of it. At the Park City council's May 28 meeting, Johns was sworn in to fill the vacant council seat formerly occupied by current Mayor Ray Mann in Ward 2.

Dawgs win two of three Matt Heilman
    The summer season is young, and as can be expected, the Valley Center Diamond Dawgs are still looking to hit their stride. Overall, the Dawgs are off to a strong start with an 8-4 record through its first 12 games. In the last week, Valley Center won two of three games.

    Several Walter Johnson League connections were represented in the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. Among the names on the list were three former Diamond Dawgs, who played a key role in the team's fourth-place finish at the 2011 NBC World Series.

    Eleven $1,000 Valley Center Community Scholarships were granted to Valley Center High School seniors who will attend college this fall. A committee of community volunteers and VCHS teachers and staff selected the recipients.

    The council learned June 11 that the city may face a 15 percent increase in health insurance costs and was asked to consider whether the city could continue to pay 100 percent of employees' premiums.
County extends comment period on de-annexation Chris Strunk
    Property owners in the Ranchos del Rio subdivisions on the west side of Valley Center are asking the county to de-annex their properties, saying the city has not provided adequate services, specifically with road maintenance. Owners of 50 of the 54 properties in the two neighborhoods signed a petition requesting the de-annexation.
