Bel Aire has best election turnout Matt Heilman At its April 9 meeting, the Park City council discussed the turnout for the April 2 election that determined council, mayoral and school board seats.

New leaders begin work in Bel Aire Matt Heilman The second Bel Aire City Council meeting of April began with a changing of the guard and concluded with a new council's first real estate agreement. Before the new council took its first official actions, departing mayor Harold Smith and departing council member Gary Breault wished the new leaders well and accepted plaques in recognition of their service. David Austin, the city's newly elected mayor also accepted a plaque in recognition of the four years he served on the council prior to his run for mayor.

American Legion post hosts flag ceremony in Kechi Cemetery Matt Heilman One of the area's oldest cemeteries will soon have more noticeable recognition for the 610 known veterans buried beneath its soil. On April 13, Valley Center's American Legion Post 73 held a short ceremony in the Kechi Cemetery just north of 61st North and Hillside that included the presentation of 32 American flags that have been donated to the Kechi Cemetery Board of Trustees.

Kechi council denies developer’s request Matt Heilman Local developer Buck Alley has done well in Kechi's Northwoods housing addition, at least as well as can be expected in a down housing market. Partnered with fellow developer Mike Farrell, continual progress is being made in Northwoods, but not to a point where developers no longer need assistance.

Chess team 12th at nationals The News staff The Valley Center chess team took 12th place in the unrated division at the national high school chess tournament April 4 through 8 in Nashville, Tenn.

Christian Youth presents ‘Dreamcoat’ The News staff Christian Youth Theater Wichita Inc. will present “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" May 2 through 4 at Northeast Magnet High School, 53rd North and Rock Road. Hornet golfers second at Crestview Matt Heilman The Valley Center High School golf team has shown improvement from the season opener in its second and third tournaments of the season and the Hornets have some hardware to show for it.

Hornet linebacker to play for Bethel College Matt Heilman Valley Center High School senior Jon Elliott was second on the team in tackles during his senior season, but was unmatched in his energy level, former Hornet football coach Pat Haxton said. The energy was accompanied by enough talent for coaches at small colleges across the state to take notice.

Hornets earn three Pre-State titles The News staff The Valley Center High School track team competed at the Shocker Pre-State Challenge April 11 and 12 at Wichita State University. The Hornets captured 10 top-three finishes and three titles.

JV softball third at North tourney The News staff The Valley Center High School junior varsity softball team competed at the North High School tournament April 13.

Middle school tennis team dominates Goddard The News staff The Valley Center Middle School tennis team impoved its overall dual record to 3-2 by winning 16 of 23 total matches April 15 at Goddard. Valley started the meet by splitting eight doubles matches. Valley won the dual by winning 12 of 15 singles matches. It was the opposite of the previous dual at Haysville where the Hornets dominated in doubles play and struggled in singles.

Middle school track at Prairie Hills The News staff The April 9 Rose Hill triangular was canceled because of the weather. The April 11 Richard Lawrence Invitational in Wellington was rescheduled for April 18. Valley Center will host a quad April 16 and a participation meet on April 22.

S.A.F.E. students pledge to buckle up Alex Arnold and Laurel Anderson The Kansas S.A.F.E. program at Valley Center High School has been very successful. From the Vince and Larry crash test dummies assembly to the various activities set up to promote safety, VCHS students have had many different learning opportunities.

Tennis team showcases depth with varsity roster Matt Heilman The Valley Center High School tennis team mixed and matched its roster in a pair of recent quad tournaments. The Hornets finished second at the April 16 Buhler quad and won the April 11 quad at Circle.

Fraternity plans pledge drive to help former VC vet The News staff Wichita State University's Delta Upsilon fraternity is planning a fundraising event for one of its alums and former longtime Valley Center veterinarian, Dr. Murray Dean. Last month, Dean retired and sold the Valley Center Veterinary Clinic in the face of a cancer diagnosis early this year. Dean owned the vet clinic in town for nearly 35 years.

VCHS to put on melodrama The News staff The Valley Center High School Drama Department will present an old-fashioned melodrama at 7 p.m. April 26 and 27 in the VCHS auditorium. The play is titled, “Royally Flushed…or the Day the Casino Came to Valley Center," written by VCHS drama teacher Kenny Carter.
