Bel Aire supports funding plan for proposed downtown district Matt Heilman The master plan is in place. And if the funding source is approved, Bel Aire's dream of a downtown retail and entertainment district will become a reality. So far, plans for the 580-acre proposed district called Caban Marketplace includes a state-of-the-art aquarium, a destination water park and resort and a 220,000 square-foot sports complex.

Park City police honored for response in VC bank robbery Matt Heilman When Valley Center's Intrust Bank was the victim of a robbery on Oct. 18, local law enforcement received kudos for its response. Valley Center police and representatives from fellow agencies across Sedgwick County secured perimeters, stayed on alert for suspicious vehicles and apprehended all four suspects hours after the crime.

Volunteers set record with food packaging Matt Heilman More than 2,000 volunteers made history. They gathered at tables throughout one of the spacious pavilions at the Kansas Coliseum complex to impact the lives of people they've never met. In the process, they broke a world record.

Valley Center High School senior Meagan Williams showcased a mix of athleticism and strength to excel at volleyball, basketball and track and field. She had offers to continue her career in any of her three specialties at the next level, but she chose to concentrate on what she does best, throw implements as far as she can.

Middle school wrestlers sweep Goddard, Haysville The News staff The Valley Center Middle School wrestling team improved its overall dual record to 8-0 with a sweep of Haysville and Goddard Feb. 14 at Haysville. The Hornets won 13 of 18 matches in both duals. Valley beat Goddard 75-21 and Haysville, 77-21.

VCHS senior takes aim at top spots in Las Vegas The News staff Manfull was in the adult male freestyle unlimited flights class with more than 600 other competitors. The competition included a Vegas round each of the days — 30 arrows at 20 yards for a possible score of 900, with 60 Xs. Manfull shot a total score of 898 with 75 Xs, and ended tied for fourth place.

Valley Center chess team competes at Pleasant Valley The News staff Valley Center K-6 chess players participated in the Pleasant Valley Chess Tournament Feb. 16. The K-2 team received second place. That team included Camdon Blunck (kindergarten), Corben Burgess (kindergarten), Rock Schomaker (first grade) and Steel Schomaker (kindergarten).
