The Valley Center High School girls wrestling team competed in a regional tournament at McPherson High School Feb. 14 and 15. The girls got seventh place in the 63-team meet with 61 points. A pair of Hornets placed in the top five of their weight classes.

The girls' 136-pounder Cheyenne Blackwood took second place in the weight class at regionals. Blackwood started the tournament with three consecutive wins by pin. She beat Lexi Deines of Great Bend in a 10-3 decision to advance to the championship match against Xara Bacci of Andover Central. Blackwood has run into Bacci at several events, and Bacci has dealt Blackwood the majority of her losses this season. This time, Bacci pinned her at 5:01.

Grace Timmons finished fourth at 170 pounds. Like Blackwood, she started off with three wins by fall before winning a 1-0 decision over Haley Phillips of Lindsborg-Smoky Valley to advance to the third-place match. Timmons was then pinned by Lyndsey Buechman of Abilene.

Bella Ramirez was 2-2 at 123 pounds, Taryn Knedgen was 2-2 at 130 pounds and Gracie Orr was 1-2 at 191 pounds.

Blackwood and Timmons will compete at the girls state tournament.

The all-class state tournament will be Feb. 27 at Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.

The varsity boys start regionals this week after going to Andover for their final dual of the season on Feb. 13. The Trojans beat the Hornets 63-18 in Valley Center's third straight dual loss.

The only Hornet wrestler to win a match was Dillon Moler at 160 pounds. Moler pinned Raul Silva 1:31 into the match.

Dallas Gould and Tony Caldwell won by forfeit at 195 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively.

The JV boys hosted the AVCTL JV Invitational on Feb. 15. They finished third out of 20 schools with 118 points.

Jesse Johnson won the 182-pound class. He had three pins before getting an 8-6 sudden victory over Jace Guerrie of Andover Central in the championship.

Hunter Slay was second at 220 pounds and Eli Hunt was second at 285 pounds. Slay had two wins by fall before being pinned by Aaron Wagner of Maize in the championship. Hunt won a tiebreaker and a decision before losing a 3-0 decision to Kaleb Oakley of Ark City in the championship.

Brett Turner and Kyler Palmer took third place at 152 pounds and 170 pounds, respectively. Turner was 4-1 with three pins and a decision. His only loss was by tiebreaker in his first match. Palmer was 3-1 with two pins and a decision.

The girls state tournament is at Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina on Feb. 27. The boys will head to regionals Feb. 21 and 22 ahead of the state tournament at Hartman Arena Feb. 28 and 29.
