Club donates thousands to local charities

It was a busy year for the Valley Center Lions Club.

In 2019, the club donated $12,000 to Valley Center charities and organizations and spent a combined 1,984 hours in volunteer service.

In addition, the Lions Club gave $2,100 to Lions Club International for disaster relief last year.

"I think the biggest thing is that we know the money is going to stay local," said Laurel Anderson, president of the Valley Center Lions Club. "We have seen money donated to various organizations and we actually get to see what they do with it. That makes us feel better about it."

Among the local causes supported by the Lions Club were VC Cares for Kids, the leader dog program, the Valley Center High School marching band, VCHS cheerleaders, a peace poster program, a free book carnival, West Elementary PTO, January Jam, eye exams for elementary schools, Band Aide booster club, food pantry, a CPR dummy for the fire department, Valley Center Safety Committee, Valley Center Community Foundation, food for the police department's K-9, the Animal League father-daughter dance, the DARE program, after-prom at the high school, Valley Center Community Scholarships, the chamber of commerce and sponsorships for camps for the deaf, blind and diabetic.

"It truly goes back to the community feel," said Anderson, who has been part of the local Lions Club for four years. "They're proud of being part of such a neat community. They're proud of where they came from."

The Lions Club meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at the Valley Center Community Center. For more information about the club, contact Myrna Hamilton at 209-7698.
