From the Library By Janice Sharp, librarian Last Updated: July 18, 2019 Summer is winding down at the library We're at the midpoint of July. It's hard to believe how quickly the month has gone. We're averaging 11 programs each week so when our summer reading activities are completed, we will spend several weeks playing catch-up. Our Family Night in the Park will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. July 18 for the family games. We have had about 350 individuals indicating they would be attending. I've ordered 600 hot dogs and buns for the evening. When the food is gone, it's gone. We will be serving the food in the Sunflower Room but seating will be available outside and inside. Families should bring lawn chairs since the Community Center will not have sufficient chairs for everyone, and the building capacity will not hold everyone. The family games will be held outside. The library is sponsoring free swimming from 7 to 9 p.m. Lisa Teachman, chief meteorologist for KSN-TV, will provide our program. Our adults will have an opportunity to play laser tag from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 19. Our Tribe teens expended their energy last week playing laser tag. The laser guns are borrowed from the Northwest Library System so next week they will be shipped back. We still have several spots available if you're interested in attending. Call the library to check our availability. We have only one more Wednesday program for our summer program, A Universe of Stories. Juggle Whatever will be our performers for the 9 and 11 a.m. programs July 24. This pair of performers will be new for us, but I'm sure their program will be wonderful. The deadline for turning in reading logs for children and youth is quickly approaching. The final deadline is 2 p.m. July 27. No prizes will be given for reading logs turned in after the final deadline. Children up to second grade in the fall should read a minimum of 25 books. Children in third grade and above should read a minimum of 25 hours. The reading logs will be returned with prize bags at the completion party to be held at the Valley Center swimming pool July 31. Free swimming is available from 10 to 11 a.m. Adults will be able to continue reading for their Summer Reading Challenge until the Aug. 31 deadline. Those completing the Challenge will be able to choose from our basket of prizes. For our final full week of summer reading activities, we will begin July 22 with our youth book discussion from 11 to 11:30 a.m. There will be story time at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for children up to 8 years old. Wednesday will be our 9 and 11 a.m. programs with Juggle Whatever. Thursday will have our Nature story time at 10:30 a.m., followed by our final movie for the summer at 2 p.m. Brick Clubs will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The Novel Bunch book discussion group will meet at 2 p.m. for its monthly discussion. Friday will be our final Tribe event for the summer with a cookout followed by games (reservations are required). Sack & Act will bring our week to a close at 10 a.m. July 27. The final story time for the summer will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. July 30. Story times will be on hiatus until Sept. 3 when we begin the weekly story times for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Library staff would be interested in your comments about our performers for this year's summer reading programs. Which performers did you like? Which performers should we not use again? Choosing performers is difficult when trying to have someone who can appeal to all ages from pre-school to upper elementary ages. I will begin choosing performers for 2020 in late October or November. Send your comments to either valleycenterlibrary @yahoo.com or janice sharp@yahoo.com.
