Golfers improve 13 strokes in a week
Last Updated: April 18, 2019

The Valley Center High School golf team played in the Newton Invitational at Sand Creek Station April 9. The Hornets shot a combined 426 and finished 14th out of 17 teams.

Coach Chris Edwards said the weather was perfect and the course was in great shape. Mason Hamm led the Hornets with an 83, which was good enough to finish 15th in of a field of 95.

Caleb Fisher shot a 106. Derek Barton had a 114. Hudson Brown finished with a 123 and Konner Brown had a 127. Ben Warner shot a 148.

On April 15, the Hornets played at Cheney's Cherry Oaks. This time, they finished with a combined score of 413, a 13-stroke improvement from their previous outing.

"We improved 13 strokes simply by removing the driver from our tee shot," said Edwards. "(We were) working on the current shot rather than worrying about the shots ahead of us or the previous hole."

Hamm shot an 87 to lead the team again; he finished 30th. Fisher shot a 100. Warner had a 112. Barton and Hudson Brown both shot 114. Konner Brown finished with 115.

Edwards said he saw each of the boys make improvements to contribute to the lower score, but he especially noticed Fisher's personal improvement.

"Caleb Fisher improved dramatically off the tee box," said Edwards. "(He is) getting better and adding in a few more par putts."

The JV boys played at Sierra Hills for their first 18-hole tournament on April 16. The tournament was hosted by Andover Central. Cameron Maltz led with a 90. West Schomaker followed with a 91. Garret Richey shot a 94. Quentin Bobbitt had a 99. Kobe Keomany and Garrett Fitch both shot a 101. Edwards said the team is showing promise despite being young and inexperienced.

"Cameron has learned to control his drives more and can certainly hit the long ball but struggled at the green finishing some longer putts," said Edwards. "Kobe Keomany and West Schomaker competed in their first tournament and showed well for being first timers out there. Our group is very young and new to golf, so improving and making simple changes to improve strokes by three or four are the goals we set for the boys."

The varsity team will head to Auburn Hills for a tournament hosted by Maize South on April 22.
