From the library

Seniors stay busy at center

We're about half way through February, which is typically cloudy, gloomy and cold. We can look forward to March with the flowers starting to pop out of the ground preparing for spring. We all have our hobbies to keep us busy during the gloomy days of February. For me, reading and doing jigsaw puzzles on my iPad keep the gloom away.

Or you could participate in our spring reading challenge. If you are a reader it's not hard to participate. Just choose your books thinking of Opposites Attract. The categories we've chosen are hot and cold, sweet and sour, love and hate, wet and dry, up and down, black and white, in and out; war and peace or "opposites" of your choosing. The challenge will continue until 8 p.m. May 30. Those turning in their reading logs will be eligible to pick a prize. We're here to help you with your selections if you have difficulty choosing.

A program, Quilting … Vintage to Modern, will be held at 10 a.m. March 2 in the large community rooms. The program will be presented by local residents Lora Lagree and Karen Roth. They will share how each quilt tells a story and how quilts have evolved from vintage to modern quilts. They will also share tricks and tips for quick quilt-making. Those attending should bring a quilt to show and share its story or ask questions about a particular quilt you're working on.

Are you over 55 years of age? Did you know that you can "officially" participate in the senior activities at the Community Center?

The lunches each Tuesday and Thursday are delicious and cost only $5.

There are activities during the month to be a part of, such as the movies shown on the third Wednesday of each month beginning at noon. Bring your lunch, watch the movie and the library will provide you with popcorn.

There are exercise sessions each Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. to help you keep active.

There are members who get together to play 10-point pitch, bridge or bunco.

If the activities are of no interest, come to socialize. Visit with other seniors in the activity area or come to the library. Grab your cup of coffee, put a lid on the cup and come to the library to visit, read the paper or read a magazine or play solitaire on one of the public computers.

February is a month that library staff spends doing annual reports and weeding the shelves. We continually go through our collection to weed books that have not been used in more than three years or are out of date. We'll be setting up our spring book sale that will begin April 5 and will coincide with the citywide garage sales the following week. This will be the first sale in our new facility – we're excited to see how we can set up to accommodate shoppers.

We have had many "firsts" since we opened July 2 last year. It's hard to believe the end of our first year is coming. As we continue to move ahead, we encourage our community to share their dreams for the use of this facility. We want to provide what our community would like to have.
