Valley Center swimmers seventh at league

The inaugural season for Valley Center High School boys swimming came to an end at the league tournament Feb. 9 in El Dorado. The Hornets finished seventh in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II-IV.

The Hornets got 74 of their 106 points in team events. The 400-yard freestyle relay team took sixth with a time of 4:58.65 and earned 26 points; the team consisted of Lastian Hughes, Dawson Griffith, Noah Schragg and Ashton Schuetz.

The 200-yard medley relay team took seventh with a time of 2:05.12 and earned 24 points; the team was made up of Cameron Morand, Tristan Mollelo, Dale Hatfield and Garret Fitch. The 200-yard freestyle relay team took eighth and also earned 24 points with a time of 1:47.13; that team was composed of the same members as the 200-yard medley relay team.

A number of swimmers won points for the Hornets in individual events as well. Hatfield got nine points for his ninth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly; he had a time of 1:12.10. Morand was 11th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.99 seconds; he earned six points.

Four swimmers each earned three points for the team in other individual events. Mollelo was 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:21.21; he was also 14th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.19. Morand was 14th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:16.19. Case Payne was 14th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 8:00.45.

Schragg was 15th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:26.55; he earned two points. Lance Welch got two points for placing 15th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.68 seconds; he also earned a point for placing 16th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:18.72.
