The struggles continue for the Valley Center High school girls basketball team. The Hornets played a good first half Jan. 11 but faltered in the second, losing 57-45 at Andover Central. They are 1-8 overall and 1-4 in Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II.

"They attacked us well, but we didn't execute our defense well," coach Trent Preheim said. "We've got to do a better job of playing the defense and running it the way it's designed to run. … It's something we got to make an adjustment to, but I know the girls will do that."

The game started out with a flurry of points by both teams from all over the court.

Andover Central hit its first four shots, all from beyond the arc, three of them from Bailey Wilborn.

Valley Center countered each trey from inside. Kassie Kinniburgh scored six and Aysia Arrowood 10 as the Hornets trailed 13-10 early.

Alyssa Turner tied the game at 13 with a 3-pointer. She popped another from downtown to give the Hornets a 16-13 lead. With Arrowood scoring their next seven points, Valley was up 23-20 at the end of the quarter.

Arrowood's bucket late in the second quarter gave the Hornets a 32-31 halftime advantage.

"It's a matter of consistency," Preheim said. "We can't do it for four quarters. If we could ever get four quarters, we could beat some of these teams that are beating us right now."

The Jaguars opened the third quarter as they had the first — hitting bombs. Three treys, including two more from Wilborn, staked them to a lead they would not relinquish at 40-34. Valley could get no closer the rest of the game.

Andover Central led 47-39 after three quarters. Twice it built a 12-point advantage — 54-42 midway through the fourth quarter and with the final score.

Wilborn hit 8 of 14 from 3-point range and led all scorers with 25 points. She did not attempt a 2-point shot. The Jags were 6 for 16 (37.5 percent) from inside the arc and 12 for 26 (46 percent) from outside.

Arrowood led Valley with 20 points, hitting 8 of 15 from the field. Valley hit 59 percent of its 2-point shots and 22 percent from 3-point range.

Kinniburgh finished with 15 points. She scored 10 in the first half, but the Jaguars adjusted its defense at halftime and held her to five points in the second half.

"They took away our inside game," Preheim said. "We knew we had the advantage in there. But when they do that, we got to get better at kicking it out for the open 3. When we do that, we got to knock ‘em down. They didn't miss when they had those opportunities. We got to start making ours when we get opportunities."

Valley Center is idle until the Mid America Classic, Jan. 24 through 26, in McPherson. The Hornets are the eight seed and will open against top-seeded Olathe South, ranked third in Class 6A,  at 3 p.m. Jan. 24.

The rest of the tournament field includes Dodge City, Manhattan, Ulysses, Wellington and Wichita Southeast.

JV falls in OT — The Hornets led by two going into the fourth quarter but couldn't hold on and lost 37-33 in overtime. Kenna Meyer scored 11 for Valley, now 2-7.

C team loses — Valley was never in this game, trailing 14-2 after the first quarter and losing 39-14. Alexis Seal scored six points for the Hornets, now 2-4.
