VCMS boys win three of four against Maize

The Valley Center Middle School boys basketball teams went 0-4 against Goddard Eisenhower Jan. 10 and took three of four from Maize Jan. 14. They were all home games.

Valley Center will compete at Andover Central Jan. 17 and host Maize South Jan. 28.

Eighth grade — The eighth-grade A team fell to 2-5 with back-to-back losses. The Hornets fell to Eisenhower 48-44 in an overtime heartbreaker.

Valley Center led 12-10 after the first quarter and 22-21 at halftime. Eisenhower took a three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Valley Center erased to force overtime. Valley Center was outscored 8-4 in the extra period.

Jacob Rutschman led the Hornets with 13 points. Qasim Urrehman had 12, Eli Lefto nine, Max Preheim and Caleb Saner four each and Dakota Deshazer two.

Against Maize, Valley Center started slow and couldn't recover, falling 56-31.

The Hornets trailed 11-1 after the first quarter and 29-12 at halftime. Maize South stretched its lead to 39-18 in the third quarter.

Lefto finished with eight points, Rutschman six, Saner five, Preheim four, Mason Ehrstein and Urrehman three each and Logan Davis two.

The eighth-grade B team couldn't overcome a 17-9 second-quarter run by Eisenhower and fell 43-32. Valley Center outscored the Tigers 19-17 in the second half. Dawson Petrie had nine for the Hornets, Davis eight, Braden Rios five, Avry Lewis and Tate Tyler three each and Deshazer and Ehrstein two each.

It was a different story against Maize for the eighth-grade B team. Valley Center broke open a close game with an 11-1 third-quarter run to win 34-20.

The Hornets trailed 11-10 at halftime and outscored the visitors 24-9 in the second half.

Petrie led the Hornets with seven points. Ehrstein and Davis had six each. Tyler and Josh Hailey had four each. Lewis added three. Deshazer and Camden Waterson had two each.

The eighth-grade B team is 3-4.

Seventh grade — The seventh-grade A team lost to Goddard Eisenhower 34-26. Valley Center trailed 16-13 at halftime and 25-17 after the third quarter.

Sam Kemp scored 13 points for the Hornets. Hank Welu added eight. Trace Emig chipped in three and Mekhi Boyle had two.

The Hornets turned the ship around against Maize, winning 52-25. Valley Center came out on fire, extending an 11-4 first-quarter lead to 28-13 at the half. The Hornets didn't stop, either, oustscoring the visitors 24-12 in the second half.

Welu led the Hornets with 21 points. Kemp finished with 18. Jaxon Lewis had seven. Dominic Wolf, Rock Schomaker and Emig had two each.

The seventh-grade A team is 3-4.

The seventh-grade B team fell to Eisenhower 43-15. Eisenhower led from the beginning and never let up. Holden McDaniel and Jonas Schielke had four each for the Hornets. Zeke Carrillo, Carter Davison and Schomaker had two each. Boyle added one.

Valley Center flipped the script against Maize, getting its first win of the season in a big way. Valley Center led 15-4 after the first quarter and 21-9 at halftime. The Hornets outscored Maize 16-0 in the third quarter for the final score of 43-17.

Davison had 12 points, Jayden Birmingham eight, Schomaker eight, Boyle six, Holden McDaniel five and Josh Cox and Carrillo two each.

The seventh-grade B team is 1-6.
