Slice of life By The News staff Last Updated: December 06, 2018 Pie auction raises $12,000 for foundation Two pies sold for more than $1,000 each. A third went for $3,000. The second annual Community Pie Auction Nov. 20 saw 20 homemade pies raise $12,641 for the Valley Center Community Foundation. "We continue to be impressed by our community members. It's amazing how much Valley Center folks support each other year after year," said Spike Anderson, president of the foundation. "We appreciate the hard work and effort that the pie bakers put into creating these masterpieces that attracted the pie buyers. The decorations were incredible and we even had one superhero show up for the event." Valley Center Intermediate School Principal Greg Lehr, whose pie brought in $3,000, dressed in a Superman outfit. "We couldn't have been successful without the pie bakers, pie buyers and the many volunteers," Anderson said. Last year's top bid was $650, also won by Lehr. "With this type of growth from year one to year two, we calculate that Greg's pie should sell for $10,846 in our third year," Anderson said. "That's a lot of pressure." This year's pie bakers included Anne Carter-Hainlen of Anne's Attic; Rachael McGettigan, Avery Automotive; Ben Scriven, Breezy's Snow Shack; Amy Sellens, Valley Center Chamber of Commerce; Rhonda Price, Valley Center Christian Church; Amanda Maness, Cottage Market; Kevin Johnson, Emprise Bank; Karen Vogt, Faith Church; Kevin Bogle, Grace Connections; Casey Carlson, Halstead Bank; Jean Balthazor, LifePoint Church; Laurel Anderson, Lion's Club; Amy Stamm, Methodist Church; Marie Logan, New Hope Community Church; Jonathan Anderson, Pathway Church; Luis Alicea, Riverlawn Christian Church; Danielle Robertson, Robertson Chiropractic; Tenille Lesperance-Holmes, St. Jude Catholic Church; Jamie Lewis, Valley Center High School; and Lehr. Stamm's pie had a winning bid of $1,325, which was given as a tribute to Helen Carey. The Riverlawn Christian Church pie had a winning bid of $1,200. The foundation will decide during its January meeting how the funds will be used specifically within the foundation and to support community projects. Foundation board members include Anderson, vice president Jerry Hawkins, Tom Bartel, Mike Bonner, Howard Botts, Jodi Kirkland, Mike Porter, Trisha Schmidt, Anita Tidemann and Olivia Wilbur, who will be joining the board in 2019. |
