The inside of Main Street Coffee is under construction. The shop is expected to open by December.

When asked what the most difficult part of opening a coffee shop in downtown Valley Center is, Pastor Art Smith said: "Being patient."

"We have to be patient and let God do what he needs to do," he added.

Smith is trying to practice what he preaches.

As New Hope Community Church works to open Main Street Coffee shop in part of Le Venue in the 100 block of West Main Street, the timeline has shifted further into the future.

Smith said they are now hoping to open the shop by Dec. 1.

It will be the city's only shop dedicated strictly to coffee. It also will serve pastries.

A sign was placed on the building last week, drawing interest to the new business.

"We've been blessed with people stepping up and helping," Smith said. "The problem with that is we have to work around their schedules. But it's actually turning out better than I thought."

The church — with the help, blessing and guidance of Le Venue owner Keith Harimon — is transforming two former storage rooms on the north side of the facility's reception hall into a coffee shop. The shop will have seating for up to 30 around the room as well as a coffee bar and a food-service bar — with an icemaker and a cooler — in the southwest corner.

The ceiling was removed to expose wooden rafters. New heating and cooling systems were installed. Custom cabinets were added, and the shop will be decorated with antiques in an industrial style.

Smith said they're waiting for the lighting to be finished and for another coat of paint on the walls before they can begin the finish work, have a health department inspection, train staff, establish hours and get the shop open.

"We're getting there," Smith said. "Keep your fingers crossed and pray really hard."

Smith said 24 people have already volunteered to help staff the shop.

Part of two walls inside the building will be dedicated to art created by local artists, Smith said.
