The 24th Annual Wichita Alternative Gift Market will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 at the University Congregational Church, 9209 E. 29th North in Wichita. Admission is free.

This market is an alternative to our modern culture of consumerism, a different kind of shopping experience. It features charitable gifts starting at only $1, fair-trade crafts and foods, café lunch and more.

Alternative gifts support Wichita families in poverty, stock American food pantries, provide educational resources to kids in low-income countries, get farm supplies to our global neighbors facing hunger and more. Sponsor tax-deductible gifts in honor of your loved ones and receive complimentary greeting cards describing the projects, plus free ornaments representing the charities. This community-wide market is family-friendly and for all-ages. Child care and children's activities are available.

The Wichita Fire Department is using boots to collect donations for the Salvation Army during the annual Christmas Boot Block. Firefighters will be at all Walmart locations, including the Walmart at 53rd North and Meridian, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 and 17.

For 31 years, the Wichita Fire Department has collected donations at area intersections to benefit The Salvation Army. Due to safety concerns, construction and potential inclement weather, firefighters will again park their firetrucks in parking lots of local participating businesses to collect money.

The community is encouraged to stop by the firetruck, drive by and drop your donation into one of the firefighter boots. It's a great opportunity see the equipment up close and help fund the many programs at The Salvation Army, such as Homeless Services, Emergency Social Services, Disaster Services, Youth Services and Foster Care, to name a few.
