Sarah Schaar runs in the 5A regional Oct. 20 in Newton. She placed fourth. Two Hornets qualify for state cross country By The News staff Last Updated: October 25, 2018 Valley Center High School will be represented by two runners at the Class 5A state cross country championships Oct. 27 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence. Senior Sarah Schaar and junior Parker Francis qualified for state after running in a Class 5A regional in Centennial Park in Newton Oct. 20. Schaar placed fourth in the girls' 5K, while Francis was 18th. Francis was fifth among runners from non-qualifying teams. Schaar finished with a 21:04. She ran at state last year when the Hornets qualified as a team. This will be Francis' first state appearance. Francis finished the regional meet with a time of 18:23. The girls' team placed seventh out of seven teams. Riley Ranzau was 29th, Alyson Hill 32nd, Holly Smith 38th, Hope Wedel 40th, Sydney Farney 41st and Bailey Emig 49th. Hays won the meet, followed by Newton and Salina Central. For the boys, Kyle Stamm was 27th, Noah Schrag 45th, Robert Crager 47th, Derek Barton 50th, Trevor Reed 56th and Diego Chavez 57th.
