Drivers hurt in chain-reaction wrecks on I-135
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: October 11, 2018

A series of car wrecks took place on northbound I-135 in Sedgwick County Oct. 2, hours after a cattle truck overturned on the highway near Newton.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, several vehicles traveling north on I-135 had to slow down because of the overturned truck, backing up slow traffic into Sedgwick County.

About 3 p.m. just north of the 101st interchange, a Ford Super Duty truck driven by Felix Torres, 25, of Newton, struck the back of a Toyota Camry driven by Lien T. Vu, 58, of Wichita. The Camry spun and hit the back of a F150 driven by Russell G. Vincent, 51, of McPherson, which was also northbound on the highway. The F150 then hit the back of a Dodge Caravan driven by Madison M. Starwalt, 22, of Newton.

Torres suffered possible injuries but was not transported to a hospital by ambulance. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Vu was taken to St. Francis with serious injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt.

Vincent suffered possible injuries but was not transported to a hospital by ambulance. He was wearing a seat belt.

Starwalt, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Wesley Medical Center with possible injuries.

About two hours later as the wreck was being cleared, another multi-vehicle, injury accident happened in the same location.

A Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Sindy M. Dick, 55, of Newton, struck the rear of a Toyota Camry driven by Barbara L. Melton, 24, of Ellsinore, Mo. The Camry then struck a four-door Kia driven by Skyla J. Muse, 18, of Kennet, Mo.

Dick, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to St. Francis with injuries. Melton was not injured. She was wearing a seat belt. A 24-year-old passenger in Melton's vehicle was also not hurt.

Neither Muse nor the three passengers in her vehicle, including a 9-month-old boy, were hurt. They were all properly buckled in, the highway patrol reported.
