Valley Center High School senior Allison Schul was recognized by the Valley Center school board Oct. 8 as a National Merit semifinalist.

Schul said she's grateful for the support she's gotten in high school.

"It's taken a lot for me to get here, trying hard in school and taking difficult classes for most of my life," Schul said. "With the support of parents, teachers and administration, I've been able to get to the spot that I am, and I'm very grateful to all of them."

Principal Jamie Lewis said the top 1 percent of 1.6 million students who enter the scholarship competition are chosen as semifinalists.

"These are certainly the most enjoyable opportunities for me, when we get to highlight our students," said Lewis, adding that Schul represents the "best of the best."

Schul was joined by her parents Scott and Sheila Schul.

Lewis said the school will learn in early February whether Allison advances to become a finalist and in mid-March whether she is a Merit Scholar.
